@GWG, if accurate naming is of such importance, should we rename Creation as Order, Void as Chaos, Fate as Void or Decay? Seeing as Void seems to have quite a it of stuff in it and its emphasis on rule-breaking over actual emptiness makes it more suited for a Order-Chaos system then a Creation-Destruction system considering that people are making stuff out of Void along with its lack of actual emptiness. Fate is more of an emptiness or false-vacuum decay thing after all (and actually was originally named void, its manifestation name was changed to distortion as @Scapheap had a different idea of void). If so, that could actually clear up some confusion...
Indeed. Not as important, since
A. the names aren't terribly wrong, compared to "The Wall of Things Which Don't Exist Anywhere Near It".
B. the names were correct until recently, and
C. the names have a good amount of Grandfather Clause behind them.

Quote
I suppose under such a scheme, the Wall of Stars would require a different name yet retain a poetic presence. Celestial Phantasmagoria? Wall of Scintillations? What name would you suggest that retains or has a greater poetic sense whilst still retaining accuracy?
I suggested a couple earlier. The Wall of Lights seems nice, and retains essentially the same structure.
Or, Akroma could name the lights and call it the Wall of [That].

as if the quantum mechanics mumbo jumbo would reduce confusion...
Confusion? Who cares about that?

Why does it bother you so much that it's called the Wall of Stars? That's most likely the mortal name for it anyway. Gods probably call it 'Shelf of Unlimited Test Run Servers' or something.

not just most likely, a couple posts back I described in detail who named it like that and why.

the wall of stars is also definetly not part of the void. The name originates from a flavour source, one of the oldest "complete" and "accurate" descriptions of the make up of the cosmos, the Codex Dimensionis, by Sir Francis of Madrid, astronomer, philosopher, occultist and most importantly, researcher of the makeup of the universe, ca. 1600. He spend most of the later half of his life with research into teleportation, portals, magical gates, etc and for many of the spheres, was one of the first humans (that we know of) who succesfully entered all of the places mentioned in the description apart from the worlds core and alternate universes, which he only speculated might exist, and returned alive to write about it. As an astronomer, you can imagine his reaction when he first made it into the hull of the cosmos, whatever you may call it, and found it to be black, and filled with glowing balls of light.

"By the gods, it's full of stars."

And thus the foundation for the naming was made. Not having the tools and knowledge at hand to know any better, he lived and died in the firm believe that the stars we see in the night-sky were projections of what he found in that part of the cosmos.

Of course the entire cosmos model is about as accurate as the model of chemistry that shows atoms as different colored balls with sticks between them. Which is to say, for humans, it's entirely sufficent. If gods would try to explain the actual state of affairs, even Will would have problems wrapping his mind around it.

Akroma just explained it. Also, a typical mortal, around the time this guy found it, would NOT name those things 'planets', so it'd probably be called the 'Wall of Stars'.

You know what else looks like stars? Planets, asteroids, distant galaxies, and even satellites.
You know what we don't call stars? Any of those things.
You know what doesn't look like a star? The Sun.
You know what we call a star? That thing.

Which brings up the question of why we still call it that. We don't call Beijing Peking anymore, we don't call orcas killer whales, we don't call galaxies stars. Want more examples?

We still call cobalt, cobalt even though we know know it has nothing to do with kobolds. We still call atoms, atoms even though we have shown that they are not indivisible. You merely selected cases that support your argument whilst ignoring ones that do not.

Also, we do indeed call orcas killer whales, and the magic world is fairly stagnant.

Also, this is just the name used by those who learn more about the magic of the world from the Codex Dimensionis, which is the most common among humans or magical beings that often dwell among humans. Will has no reason at all to have ever heared of it, or have any idea how about the cosmos model at all. Angel as a demon likely uses an entirely different name. The dragons likely use an entirely different name. Yup, the name does not even have any ingame consequences for you. If you just don't like it OOC, well, boohoo.

Actually, since I'm in a pretty bad mood at present, I'm going to be draconian. Take all discussion of this issue to the PMs or I lock the OOC thread until I see fit to re-open it.
