Hi all,

My version of dwarf fortress keeps crashing just at random while in the middle of play. What is the best way for me to figure out what is causing this.. or at least gather enough information to submit it as a bug? All I know how to do is look at the event viewer.

Windows 7, 64 bit, Vanilla Dwarf fortress, dfhack 0.34.11 r3 (no tweaks applied)

Yeah, that's the one. In older/long history forts the game can crash when it runs out of the default 2gb ram the OS allocates for it, this patcher can prevent that crash by letting the game use more ram. Only use it if you have more then 3gb of ram in your system! I'm not sure that one in the link will work with the current 34.11 version, I'd download a LNP and use the LAA patch found in that package.
Just run it once and see if it helps.

Thanks I have 8GB of RAM and this is a very old fort (50+ years, 300+ dwarfs) so I'll see if it helps

Edit: Aww It doesn't help because it's not compatible with the latest copy of DF

Check Meph's Masterwork mod, I know it has a LAA patch for the current version of DF

So I can just download it and just use the exe in my vanilla df install? Just want to make sure it's not going to change anything else.

Yes, just download masterwork/LNP, extract the LAA patcher.exe, show it the location of dwarffortress.exe, patch, and it will modify your executable, but nothing else.

If you google you can find a few applications that will make "any" program LAA. Thats how I did it to my game, and it works quite well.

What plans there? I'm currently toying with an amphibious race, and the results are disappointing.
Its pretty much a case of, innately born to swim, civilization spawns in the ocean, cannot drown, and when you enter fortress mode at least as terrified by water as an elf. You have all of the water avoiding mechanics of a dwarf, but if you accidently do start swimming you survive.
