Mechanical Nightmare!
« on: August 11, 2013, 08:20:34 am »

I am currently trying to make a really elaborate trap, danger room, and arena but I am finding it difficult to attach all my devices to all my other devices, does anyone know of any mods that can help me keep track of which device I have already attached to another device.

I like how when u assign dwarfs beds and tables and such that it's color coded based on if they already have a like object or not. I wonder if their is a mod that can help keep track of all of these damn objects lol, kinda like a Dwarf Therapist for my Mechanical objects.

If it's lever or pressure plate, once it's linked, that device's off their list entirely. Can't really help with overall system complexity other than double-checking way too often and using hatches/grates of different colors next to the part to hook up to guessimate which hooks to which in my projects.

dfhack gives the possibility to view objects linked to currently examined. (ctrl-m by default)

I don't see anything happen with ctrl+m and dfhack is running for me.

You can also use notes shift+n to label every mechanism and lever. How you organize it is up to you but it only takes a moment to place a note. For instance, you could label every lever 'link to mechanism 2 7 9' and when its done edit it to 2* 7* 9* so you know those are done.

Oh and do a movie when your done with your masterpiece so we can see it in action. :)

@Ivan: if I remember correctly, you have to use the loo(k) tool on a mechanism/lever/etc. before using the ctrl-m shortcut. Or you don't have the keybinding set-up, check the dfhack.init in the DF directory.

Try q on a linked object, then in dhack, gui/mechanisms
I just used that, and it showed me (on a pressure plate) the linked dolomite gear assembly.  You can use +/- to scroll through both sides of the link, and this also works for items that have multiple links. (say, like 4 pressure plates tied to the same gear)
