I threw my keyboard...
« on: August 09, 2013, 03:41:11 pm »

So I start up a Adventure mode with a human archer demigod, and build him to be the perfect archer with attributes. When the game starts i immediately go practice on some groundhogs and wrestle with some huge birds for some other stats. Finaly, after spending some time trying to get my skills ready, I coincidentally come across this camp.

I sneak my way over there, and find 6 vomitting ravens.....
I guess that should have been a warning but, yolo right?
So i take a shot at a raven and immediately a kobold archer see's me.

Its just me and him... staring at each other... with the exception of 5 vommiting ravens running away

So in my mind "Perfect! What better way to start my archery journey then with an unarmored kobold grunt!"

So I take a shot, my first shot, my only shot to a hostile creature, and it goes like this.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I hit his nail... he hits my face and penetrates to my brain.

If you want to powergrind an archery skill the best way is to go to a hamlet, stand next to a building, fire at the side of the building but up one level. This prevents your arrows from breaking and increases your skill. Just make sure you're standing back far enough that the arrows don't land on top of the house.

Personally, I very very rarely see kobold warbands. I've encountered a couple in my time but that's not very much given how much adventure mode I've played. Given, I think about 75% of them that I have encountered killed me with their archers or... spearmen. Little bastards are tricky.

Thanks for the tip, I thought Kobolds or easy to kill, and though they usually dont wield a lot of armor, i guess a lucky shot is a lucky shot...

a much easier way to train the 'archery' skill in by throwing, because that trains both skills ad the same level, so find a tile with something you can pick up (black sand, rocks, clay) or just throw something of yours on the ground (remember to pick it up when you are finished). so, press [g]et, used abcde to pick the item, [t]hrow, use a-z to pick the item, enter to throw it on the ground under you so you can pick it up again. congrats! you threw something, you should now have 30 exp in throwing and archery (if you didnt put points into them at the beginning) you will have to do this 600 times to gain the 18000 exp necessary to get legendary thrower/archer, so i recommend setting up a macro: on your tile, press ctrl+r to start recording a macro, perform the throwing procedure once (or twice, or 3 times (or 7 times to be most efficient)) and press ctrl+r again to stop recording. if you press ctrl+p, your character should carry out the action and throw *sand* onto the floor. then press ctrl+u to set a custom macro playback, 99 to play the macro 99 times, and ctrl+p to execute that, and after a while, (you can afk this bit) youll have legendary thrower and archer before youve even left your village

BEWARE: the only way to stop a macro playing is to move your mouse off the DF window or open another window, this means you cant watch youtube while the macro is playing, and you may get attacked and die if you cant stop the macro, human_dictionary and the bay 12 games forum inc. take no responsibility for damage caused to adventurers and morale while using macros™

(if you do stop a macro, the 'playing' text will flash at the top, just find a safe spot and play the macro again a couple of times using ctrl+p and it should go away)

P.S. save the macro you are currently using with ctrl+s, and load macros with ctrl+l

As well as that, throwing is (in my opinion) better than bows/crossbows in every way. Its faster, more versatile, ammo is easier to find and always reuseable, it's remarkably simpler to train and... well it's freaking awesome to chuck a dead elephant at a troll.

Armour is largely irrelevant when looking at archery - bolts and arrows pierce almost everything.

Kobolds _are_ easy to kill, but so are low-level adventurers, maybe even more so. The outcome of a ranged fight depends largely on luck of the draw when hit locations are calculated (can't say for certain, but i think those are purely random, with no or very little influence of skill) and on the defensive skills dodging and shield use.

Defensive skills are very important for survival in DF combat, and they're the key to surviving encounters with archers.

Personally I've had very little trouble with archers. I tend to strategically hide behind and run between trees to get as close to them as possible, and always target them first.
That said, I'm sure other people do that and aren't as successful. I'm just lucky or something.

Archers fov is always superior to yours, especially at night it's not uncommon to have a full quiver in you before you find where the shots are coming from.

Like I said, I think I just get lucky. It's more a placebo than anything else.

That and I take every precaution I can not to be attacked at night.

Kobolds are often found fighting wildlife, they were probably gutshot.

Bolts and arrows in DF tend to be show stoppers.
