Lordship spin-off?
« on: August 05, 2013, 02:49:56 pm »

For those of you who don't know what Lordship is (or was), check it out here: http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=121161.0

My favorite forum game is dead. :( There's plenty of blame to go around, but what's done is done. Maldevious has decided not to continue it, and its his game, he does what he wants with it. But I don't want to give up so easily on the world we were enjoying. So I made this thread to gauge the interest in perhaps doing a spin-off game.

I was thinking maybe we could just ignore the last update from the main thread and just say Count Stone died in the battle (apparently our rolls were bad enough to warrant that), and we could take over as our son, little Isaac Stone, when he comes of age (14, or so, years later).

However, I know I'm certainly not up to the task of writing such a spin-off. I'm not an elegant author or really all that creative. However, I think together, we could be up to the task. But I'm not sure how to make that work. Take turns writing updates? Maybe get a group of players together to group-write it? I don't know, but I do know that I really love this game and I don't want it to just sputter out kinda pathetically like it did. I'm willing to work to keep it alive. Anyone else in? Anyone have any ideas how to make it work?

Point is, what interests you about the game?  If it's the setting or the idea, a spin off might work.

If it's the story, the characters or the writing style, then it won't work. Not with a bunch of random thread watchers, anyway.

Besides, I've only seen 1 successful attempt at a multi GM game of the style you've been suggesting, and that was a minimalist game that spontanely erupted from a random derail.

Hmm. Wouldn't be the same, but we could try. Although I suggest we just get Mal back. He would not stand idly by forever and eternally witness the wailing and gnashing of teeth among those he hath forsaken. He merely wishes to crush our souls and subject us to a thousand years of humiliation and suffering for our disbelief in him. Other than that, he's quite reasonable.

Nope. Won't happen. He's adamant this time. I think the story is best left where it lies.

What warranted the sudden change in opinion? A PM?

I do feel that a story of Issac stone, with players trying to fill up the details as the games carries on, is interesting.

I don't see the point of pushing Mal. He definitely needed some rest.

I would support it we could say first stone died and now his son {obviously really mad at the sea raiders for taking away his dad before he could really know him} watches his mom take over ask why she does the decisions she does while studying to be as good as his dad.

Of course i'm not at all a good GM either maybe wyrm? he seems to be a veteran from what ive seen in this part of the forum.

Playing as Samuel's son would be a nice sequel.

And why do people keep looking to me as an ideal GM? That's the second time today.

Because you actually advertise your games?  :-\

I would offer to run this if I hadn't already ideas for my own suggestion game and didn't have school stuff to work on and if I didn't feel like I had to back up every update I make with a bunch of citations.

I'm sorry but I don't think anyone should start a Lordship spin-off. It was Maldevious's awesome creation, and in my opinion, only he should work with it. I'd love to see a game that used similar 'mechanics' to it and was inspired by it though :)

To tell the truth, Mal“s locked game back then caught my interest, and undoubtly is one of the Reasons I tried my hand at GM“ing. So I am quite sad to see it go "for good". I will however join the choir that is against continuing it without Maldevious. It is after all his work and brainchild; Unless he himself gives permission to do so, I would very much dislike to see such a thing happening. To be honest, even then, but that may just be me.

If anyone wants to take up a similiar game (As I did with my second try that somewhat hit off "Warlord", truly mostly a learning experience for me, but let us leave it at that.) I would recommend getting the system right before starting the game, and while ones own style is nice, to keep the happenings brief. Caus they add up.  :P

But yeah, I would be all over a new "Lordship Style" game. As a hint, making it a fantasy setting should somewhat prevent any talk about what nobility did at what time and tech standards. Because the GM can adjust such matters as he likes, without repercussions or contra.

Exactly. He seems firmly done. I've asked him to allow me to continue as GM, although I prefer to be in the saddle rather than in the horseshoes. It's been a long time since I DMed. We're talking 2nd edition AD&D and THAC0 rolls on quests to kill goblin chiefs. There was a time when all that stuff used to be bleeding edge, too. I'd do it to continue this particular tale, though. I have no interest in a copy-cat tale. Just Isaac. Being derivative and trying to replace Lordship with something blatantly like Lordship, yet not Lordship, is even worse than fan-ficking this. IMO.

No it isn't worse because you're not taking over someones work, but making your own adaptation in their stead. Maldevious has put an end to Lordship because he felt it should end, let it be because its his work not yours unless he gives someone permission to take it up. It doesn't feel right to fan-fic the game when you can make something similar and make it your own invention instead.

Its not a problem, it just won't actually be Lordship without Maldevious running it, him and his amazing skills in writing and they way he told the story was a very important part of what made it wonderful for me to read.
