Death of a Monarch

So my fortress is pretty good.  I'm happy with it.  I have a good military, I have a project going on to flood some caverns to grow more food.  I am building a nice tower, and have a beautiful Great Hall, which includes a limestone and green glass dome to the outside world.

Unfortunately, my King died.  I don't know why.  There was no action, no fighting, he was just found dead.

What happens when a monarch dies?  Will there be no migrants?  Will I get another monarch?

The monarch dying doesn't have any effects that I know of, though you'll never get a new one since succession doesn't happen after world gen.

When a monarch dies, they will not be replaced unless they have an heir to succeed them. Though I've yet to have a king with any heirs, so I'm not sure if that actually occurs properly or not. If anything, this is good, as it means no more mandates and demands, and can potentially free up space reserved for the king/queen.

Though if you really want a monarch you can use DFHack's make-monarch script to elect a dwarf of your choosing to the position.

Migrants shouldn't be affected, as long as there are still dwarves in the world and your fort isn't considered too dangerous to migrate to.

Can you tell us anything more about the monarch in question (age/any medical history/was he in any fights/etc.)? If you build a slab for him it should say on the slab exactly how he died.

well, no combat was in the OP, which leaves at least 2 good options, old age or vampire

To be fair, deaths make a place "dangerous", noble deaths are worth more, and even more by rank of the noble.  the death of the Monarch might be enough to scare off migrants for a season or so.

My fort always goes to shit before it's monarch time -.-
Only once I got to getting royalty.

It's possible he had a run-in with a human spearman, given that there was an. . . incident. . . during a pitting.  But nothing turned up in the combat reports.  It seems like he just done fell over.  I did not even realize it until I saw that a "mechanic" was found dead. 

Mostly I am annoyed that I prepared maginificent apartments for him, that are now being taken over by the rabble.  I might give them to the duke instead. 

No migrants--mind you, I had a huge die off recently---combination of FB that webbed more than half my fortress (many of whom starved to death as a result), plus a gobin siege that came in through the aquaduct when water levels were low.  Also, the humans are at war with me.  I do not know why.  They keep hanging around the edges of the map, doing nothing.  I would really like to get some migrants, and caravans, at least, until I can get a proper farmland up and running.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to get the damned humans to just attack already?  I already made a strategic error with my marksdwarves, sending them against human crossbowmen, but I would like to clear them off the map.  The front door is open for them, invitingly so, and the water trap is all primed (worked a treat on the goblins, who just charge in).

Humans are smarter than goblins and will actually siege your fort rather than just throwing themselves against the walls. Typically, they'll stand around and attack anyone who comes outside. You'll have to find some way to bring the hurt to them.

Cave-ins are hilarious. If you can send a dwarf to tunnel underneath them, collapse the floor beneath them. You can also try using ballistae to piss them off. If you have any captured FBs, you can always unleash those on them.
