Are Gray Guards basically specially-chosen humans, or do they have additional characteristics?

Accepting Humans as the fourth major race, with a Military specialty, and the Grey Guards as your House's subset thereof.  Just need one more House (of any race) to begin.

Edit: I'm reading Grey Guards as being more artificially selected a la Brave New World than directly engineered, so it's within Imperial guidelines.  I will probably tie their creation to those of the Wraithers in the Imperial History, since it seems a convenient dovetail to work with.

Their DNA is engineered to make them to 75% related in contrary to the 50% of Normal Siblings. That has a simple practical reason: it has been noted that in eusocial species, the drones or non child bearing specimens are related to 75% to each other, that is more than to their own offspring. Since instinct-wise you want your DNA to suceed it is more useful for these specimens to make sure their sisters and their parents survive or produce children than if they make their own. Thus, a 75% similiarity in DNA would be indeed preferable in the Grey Guard since the soldiers treat their siblings like anybody else would their offspring.

On top of that they recieve Growth Hormones, are kept one and a half year in the artificial wombs instead of 9 months and recieve increased amounts of Oxygen during their stay. Basically mostly non Genetic Modification to Improve Mental and Physical Capabilities and Acclerate their General Growth, which as a byproduct increases lifespan.

All that stuff makes them smarter,stronger and faster (and very importantly more loyal) within reasonable limits. So yeah while not exactly their own species they are a Subrace of Humans, since centuries of selective breeding pretty much made them different to humans, although not much. It's like the difference between an Irish Wolfhound and a Poodle.

Dynasty Name: DisBarr

Dynastic History: DisBarr came to the forefront of Imperial politics 500-600 years ago, after it was discovered that a small militaristic enclave of previous human colonization was left undisturbed in the Rift. Though at first the self proclaimed 'Empire of the Barr' had resisted fiercely any attempts to control it, their great fighting spirit (combined with Empire's higher technological and industrial developement) lead to exceedingly more and more free lances for the Imperial Legion being hired from there, both enlisted men and officers (the most notable being L'Xander DisKosygin, Emperror Garalex's head of royal guard and Petras DisBarr, the mastermind behind the Clockwise Conquests.) After a few generations, in 547IR, the planets were formally integrated into the Empire and (along with another 2 neighboring worlds) entrusted to house DisBarr to oversee.

Quadrant: Rift

Named Worlds:
DonBarr- the "homeworld" of the old empire, filled with countless monuments to long forgotten (by everyone but the locals) victories and the location of the DisBarr primary residence.

DonGard and DonMasque- the "home counties" of the old empire, still populated to a large degree by it's descendants.

Race (Major): Humans.

Race Physical Description: Standing anywhere 5-6 feet tall (as a rule of thumb), this subspecies of human has 2 arms (ending in 5 agile fingers), 2 legs (ending in 5 semi-atrophied toes) and 1 head (covered, again, as a rule of thumb, with dark hair). Due to being isolated from the rest of humanity for almost 2 millenia, the locals posses a rather pale skin, instead of the more typical olive-brown, though it's not as pronounced today as it was half a millennium ago.

Racial Society: Humans in the 'Home Counties' are organised into a strict feudal/caste society, with the taller, paler Distraktar (ruling class) providing political and military leadership, the shorter Barkratar (middle class) perofrming the trade and engeneering tasks, and the somewhat tall and flat faced Larbratar (lower class) performing the farming and menial industrial work (as well as being drafted en masse every time there's a war). The other planets are rather more lax on this system, mostly due to the fact that Distrakar refuse to accept new members, and people on other planets are rather opposed to the idea of becoming a Larbat.

Brief Racial History: During the First wave of colonization one of the generation ships was sent to what we now call DonBarr. Due to the social processes on board during the journey, the people who arrived were both unaware of Earth (considering it more of a myth than a real place) and not quite able to communicated with it, even had they wanted to. Indeed it would be over 700 years before they will have launched their first locally produced satellite, to say nothing of subspace communication. It was thus a massive surprise for both Imperials and locals when they were rediscovered in 389IR.

Dynasty Name: Toron

Dynastic History: House Toron was incorporated into the Lesser Empire in the Year of Thunder, when Empress Skyrunner began her assault on the Elder Alliance. Lynheim was one of many planets abandoned by the Empire after the destruction of Earth more than fifty years before. In the chaos that followed the withdrawal of Imperial support, House Toron came to control the planet, and under Toron leadership Lynheim managed to avoid falling to the Elder Alliance through a campaign of deception and... unsavory tributes. When the Lesser Empire invaded nearby Elder systems in 315 L.E, Kaylee Toron (who was then the High Seat of House Toron) led Lynheim to rejoin the Lesser Empire, and provided soldiers and strategic data that proved instrumental in the liberation of the Quadrant. As a reward for the valuable aid and loyalty to the Empire, Empress Skyrunner formally instated House Toron as a major power within the Empire, giving them governership of other surviving human colonies in the Reach. This influence and power eventually led to House Toron's ascension to the Archonate.

Quadrant: Reach

Named Worlds: Lynheim- the traditional seat of the house, a world characterized by its tall, jagged mountains and its many enormous freshwater lakes.

Race: Human

Race Physical Description: The men and women of House Toron share the physical quirks of all inhabitants of Lynheim; that is, in all important respects they are indisputably human, but with a notably darker skin tone than the galactic median and a cultural predilection for elaborately dyed and braided hair. A Lynheimer is immediately identifiable by their hair, for it is braided in such a way that the dye forms a specific pattern, symbol, or even a picture. Members of House Toron frequently display pride in their heritage by having their hair styled to display a stooping cyan falcon, the House sigil.

Racial Society: Like most of humanity, organization of society on Lynheim is along feudal lines, with the common people positioning themselves within large corporations on a semi-meritocratic basis, with the corporations themselves being beholden in various ways to the ruling aristocracy, themselves largely tied to House Toron. Citizens of Lynheim are quite proud of the time they survived independent of the Empire, a view which persists since most of the less sympathetic histories of that time have been purged. As far as the history books are concerned, Lynheim was too tough a nut to be worth cracking by the fractured and weak Elder Alliance.
