Glumprong
« on: June 14, 2008, 10:27:00 am »

I was looking at some of my dwarves' preferences, and found a female dwarf who liked Glumprong.
What the heck is Glumprong ? I checked in my French/English dictionary, found a meaning for both glum and prong, but still, I don't see what a sullen (or gloomy) fork teeth is supposed to be...

I have also noticed that some dwarves like 'crescents'

Well, I know what a crescent is, but have never come across one in the game - any ideas what it actually refers to?

Probably means they like to engrave crescents, or like having crescents engraved in their rooms.

Pretty much.

The reason you don't find 'Glumprong' in the dictionary is because it is, indeed, a made-up tree. And the reason it's a made-up tree is because it's specifically made for evil biomes.  :)

Toady also created the feather tree, which grows in good areas. The feather tree does not grow feathers (though it leaves are descirbed as "feathery"), but rather is extremely light. Objects made from its wood weigh half that of the same object made from adamantine. Conversely, glumprongs are the heaviest trees. There's not much else about them, except that they are said to have living shadows.

Some people call crossants (the curved french breakfast pastry) crescents, perhaps this is it?

I'm going to say no. AND cast aspersions about these people who call a croissant a crescent. Life must be tough for them, but it should be tougher.
I will second the idea that, if that dwarf gets to engrave, you will see an awful lot of crescents.

Apple trees are pretty scary when they lose their leaves.

I've always imagined a glumprong as a gnarled, leafless tree with two main branches almost hanging down.

Leafless trees wouldn't grow, though!

What would look positively evil is an old, gnarled, oak tree sort of shape, covered loosely with large, daggerlike needle foliage.

You've obviously never embarked on a terrifying biome.  Undead trees do indeed grow.
