running into water for my first time - Bummer

So I am on my way building my fortress and I was making u[/down stairs, and the next thing I know theres a little icon saying water 7/7. Is there anyway to get rid of this water so that I can mine?

That's probably an aquifer:

Not that easy to handle for a beginner. You could check whether it spans the whole map or whether you could dig around it.
