Black Talons - a sci-fi RTT

Hi there!

I’m Sergio from Camel101 and I'm new at Bay12. At this time, I want to share with you Black Talons, the video game that we are working for. I hope you like!


WHAT IS BLACK TALONS?

A new real time tactics game set in a sci-fi universe, featuring a mercenary commander trying to prevail in a ravaged star system. Black Talons is a new incursion on the universe we discovered on Gemini Wars. The game is still in development for Windows, Mac and Linux systems, and more details about the release date will be provided soon.



KEY FEATURES

  • Persistent and customizable squads.
  • Deep campaign mode. The actions of the player directly affect the balance of power on the system. There is one main objective to achieve, but there's much more to do.
  • Customizable Battlecruiser. The Battlecruiser serves as the base of operations, and can be customized with weapons or infrastructures that will boost the squad numbers, teleport soldiers or even bombard the battlefield.
  • Faction relations. There are a number of neutral minor factions in the game. These factions will have missions available for contract work. When the player completes missions for a certain faction, the relations will improve with that faction. On the other hand, completing missions against a faction will lower the relations with it. Having good relations allows the player to train or buy units unique to that faction. Having bad relations will make that faction randomly attack the player during missions.
  • Upgradeable and unique (per class) skill tree for all units
  • 5 worlds with different environments and weather conditions that directly affect the battle: rain, fog, snow, ionstorms and more insane stuff.
  • Different unit classes with specialized roles: Recon, Tactical, Assault, Support, Engineer. Each class can carry a different set of weapons and has its own abilities. Powerful mechs can enter the battlefield with salvaged or bought equipment and weapons.

I met the Camel 101 guys at the GDC , VERY nice! In fact they were looking to get hosted on project Thunderix until we pushed it back to september! GREAT to see you up here mate!

You had me at mercenary commander. The key features list has me salivating. I hope you can succesfully implement most of the stuff mentioned. Good luck.

I have a few questions, if you can answer them:
What are your thoughts and plans for mod support?
Is failure an option or will my mercs at worst be "knocked out" for a few missions?

This sounds amazing!

Could you give me any more details on the level of customisation for squads/soldiers/cruiser? Will there also be any kind of 'player character' or avatar (thinking in the same type of the old Jagged Alliance games).

Looks great though, would buy!

It looks good and very similar to Simon Roth's Maia engine.

With how I think merc. groups in the future work, there will be a massive amount of dudes to hire.

I would like Mod support, or at the very least a map editor.

Also my own question!

Will each class be limited to its weapons that it can have as I always have wanted a Sniper that carries around a Shotgun for CQC instead of a dinky pistol

PTW. This looks fantastic, and makes me think of Dawn of War 2 meets Toy Soldiers. I like it.

When I see RTS, I think stuff like Starcraft.

So... are you trying to say this is a squad-based game similar to X-Com: Apocalypse Real Time Mode?

@Iceblaster: At the moment we don't have plans to make the mod support or a level editor, sorry.
@Kaje: In the KS video you can see how many customisations you have for the squads and mechs. But this information will extend in a few days in the KS entries.

OK, I get the feeling this is just them doing advertising. Appear, say something, no replies, find thread, bump with info, go away again.

Of course I'm part of the Camel101 team. But I think that the whole project is interesting for Bay12 Games Forum. In fact, I replied the questions above and I can response you all of the doubts that you have with our Black Talons project.

What previous games have you three worked on? You make mention of that fact but cite no specific references in the KS page, so you might want to update that. Also, the images make it look like you already have a game engine and a lot of art assets in place, but it could be that it's merely a mockup. Could you clarify?

Mod support is brilliant these days, I wouldn't have bought something like Shadowrun without knowing mod support was on its way and it basically gives you (the developer) free testing, free bug removal and even free expansions while giving the fans a better experience. If some tries to rip you off and the internet finds out--you get free sympathetic press.

How does your game differ in playstyle from X-com, either old or new?

Yep! Your best bet is to make the game completely open source, or as close to it as possible.

And, to expand upon Goat's point, modding extends the game's lifespan by a large factor. Had minecraft been unmoddable, it probably would have died by now, and had far fewer sales than it has.
Any game that does NOT support modding in my book is just retard. Modding allows the game to outlive their design and *shipped* playtime, and that is very well said, minecraft without modding is a game no one heard about, modding IS the futur, preventing modding is like trying to race with a coal-powered car.... That totally stupid. Now if the modding would go against the spirit of the game, thats another story but to be honest, i can hardly find any game that would fall in that category, maybe the Alan wake serie?

Oh the MMO games cant really be modded because well... you know MMO. So if you REALLY like the game you are making, MODDING, add fragging MODDING, not doing so is basicly getting a child born in this world and giving that child a 30yrs life expentancy instead of giving your child a chance to live as long he wants, are you THAT cruel?
