What happens if you say no when the liason asks if you want to become a barony?

3) He keeps asking every year and you can't request items again until you do.

Well that's boring.  I was hoping you could create your own kingdom with your own king, etc.  You know, make your own independent empire.

Does anyone know if this will be possible during the next release, with retirement of forts and such?

That wouldn't make in-game sense, because you are supposed to be setting up an outpost for the glory of your king/queen. You are a settlement funded BY that kingdom. The dwarven caravan comes every year with supplies, in the hopes that every barrel, every roll of cloth they bring can help to establish another glorious Mountainhome. Much hope rides on you.

This is treason!

Although it could be a good scenario, even if it means the embark message needs to be changed...

funny, i always thought that the dorfs were a bunch of exiles from the mountainhome, banished to the booze-less, alligator infested wilds for stealing socks. every so often another batch of useless petty criminals get sent into exile, and wind up on your doorstep.
of course i am Australian, so maybe i'm just projecting.

if you could declare independence from the mountainhomes, you could then have the mountainhomes send an expeditionary force, in an effort to force you to join them again. dwarf sieges would be cool, even more so if you could bribe them to join you.

The mountainhomes don't intend the forts as penal colonies, it's the player's (mis-)designs which make them so.

Losing the permission to negotiate for trade makes perfect sense to me - you've outgrown the needs of an outpost and won't get the full support of your civ until you accept your new role. It's a bit annoying that right now, landed nobles are merely chain-mandaters with no actual use apart from 'keeping' trade agreements.

I hope that splitting from your parent civ becomes an option some time. I don't think full-out wars between _civilisations_ based on the same entity template (i.e. two dwarf civs fighting each other) are possible now, and the likely change of loyalties could mess up a fort quite thoroughly. So it's probably not an easy addition to make.

Independence and retaliation are things intended at some point:
We don't really have the consequences all coded for refusing the barony -- once that relationship is established more formally, it should be respected when your fortress retires.  It could very well end up as its own civilization at that point (and you'd also have dwarf invasion trouble at times).

It'll make for some great stories in the "father fighting son", or the "sister fighting brother" sort of way. These can already happen of course, but this would make them much more common.

Even if it was like that, I'm willing to bet you guys still have the current monarch of England on at least one denomination of your money.

My Baroness is a baby factory , I have a feeling that my fort is gonna be nothing but cousins in two generations... Though she doesn't have strong cravings and she only loves splints. Urist M.D. is happy though.

When picking mandating nobles choose someone who "doesn't often experience strong cravings" and likes something that your for needs like beds.
