Jobs for Special Needs Dwarves
« on: July 03, 2013, 01:49:36 pm »

If my military dwarves survive injuries so severe that they're no longer useful in battle, I usually set them to a 'comfortable' retirement of reloading cage traps.

But at the moment I find myself needing to retire a dwarf with one hand missing and the other mangled beyond use. Assuming he ever stops trying and failing to pick up a bar of soap, what kind of jobs would y'all recommend for a dwarf without the use of his hands?

That's a good question.  Do managers or brokers need hands to do their jobs?  If not, those would be perfect.

Bait? A watchdwarf? Exploring the caverns? You never know, he might survive a fight or two, kicking and biting.

Do dwarves need hands to do combat demonstrations or sparring?

I am trying to make chickens lay bees as eggs. So far it only produces a single "Tame Small Creature" when a hen lays bees.
Honestly at the time, I didn't see what could go wrong with crowding 80 military Dwarves into a small room with a necromancer for the purpose of making bacon.

They apparently need a working hand just to report a crime. At least according to the cancellation spam I was receiving after one particularly bad siege.

Children you rescue shouldn't behave like rabid beasts.  I guess your regular companions shouldn't act like rabid beasts either.
I think that's a little more impossible than I'm likely to have time for.

Well if he can't point at the one he is accusing, obviously he can't properly report it. It's not like Dwarves can actually hear each other speaking through all that beard.

Obviously you need fingers for pointing.

If you can catch a werebeast you can rehabilitate this guy by infecting him. Meanwhile, you can use him as a medical training dummy. Drop him off a bridge now and then so the doctor can practice sewing him up again.

Also, try forbidding the soap if he won't stop trying to pick it up.

The obvious solution is to create a squad of armless legendary biters. Picture Hitmonlee with teeth and a beard.

This is the only one that I can see working, and probably only worth the effort if said injured dwarf was a badass.  Anyone have a good way to capture werebeasts?

I can't believe you guys!

This is a proud and noble Dwarf, a member of your civilization, injured in glorious combat in defense of your mighty fortress!  He should be honored, not treated as a training dummy, or bait, or anything else so demeaning.  This dwarf has been horrifically maimed in your name, and he should be treated with the respect that any veteran deserves.  I say he deserves his own massive room, tomb, and dining hall, as well as a trophy room with statues and slabs detailing each and every one of his kills (if any).

Honestly, I'm a little disappointed in all of you.  Cursing your dwarves with lycanthropy, purposefully injuring him to train your doctors...Have ye no honor? Have ye no sense of Dwarvenly PRIDE?!

Lycanthropy is a valid means for gaining limbs. In any case, I was suggesting training instructor. Plus, kicking is always a thing. Legendary kickers - who the hell needs arms?
