Dragon's Prophet - An Action MMORPG

Dragon's Prophet main website

A good video overview of gameplay and features by TotalBiscuit

Dragon's Prophet is a free to play MMORPG in the vein of Tera or Neverwinter with a focus on attack timing, character placement and timed evasion. It also has a unique pet system; Dragons are more than just a placeholder in the title. Every character regardless of class will be able to tame and summon a dragon ally, and there are several dozen different dragons of various species to collect, each with it's own stats and skills. These serve a dual purpose, both as a mount for the player and an ally for combat.

The game also has some pretty robust character development. Despite only having four classes to choose from, each class has a wide range of skills to pick and choose so you can develop your own playstyle. You also get free stat points each level to invest directly into the character's base statistics to allow even more diversification and letting the player fine-tune their build.

Of course, there are more selling points I could go over but I'm sure there's a dozen different people who have written up something better than I could hope to post here, so let me go over a couple things about what might turn you off from this game:
  • The cutscenes and general story elements are fairly bad. The opening scene has the voice-over talking over itself at some points. Personally I don't mind this kind of stuff, I tend to skip story elements in MMOs.
  • Questing is standard MMO fetch fodder, if you've played any recent MMO you know the deal.
  • I haven't been playing long but from what I gather there isn't much end-game content. This seems to be a pretty common trend in MMOs lately, but the game is still new and there is content in development. However, if you level fast or spend a lot of time playing... Expect to run out of things to do unless you really enjoy collecting/training dragons
  • The servers don't appear to be hugely populated for F2P MMO standards. I believe this is because the game simply didn't get much media coverage despite being published by SOE.

Sounds like a personal problem.

I'm leery of free to play East Asian MMOs.  Is this gonna be some agonizing pay to win grindfest?

I've only been playing a few days so I can't really give first hand experience for the end-game, but from what I've heard it's kind of along the same lines as PlanetSide 2 in terms of necessary unlocks. Shelling out a bit of money will let you upgrade some equipment faster, but you can just as easily not pay any cash and invest some time into farming. The only things you really "need" to pay money for are a couple bag + bank space unlocks (You get two free unlocks at levels 10 and 20, but from what I'm seeing it doesn't quite cut it if you play long-term), and one or two unlocks in the Dragon Lair are required to max out skill slots.

I'd ballpark the bag + dragon unlocks to come in between $8-$15 depending on preferences, less if you buy Station Cash during a double or triple sale day (Fourth of July is coming up, and should have at least double). I haven't gotten into the upgrade system so I can't really comment on that.

Sorry for the resurrection, but I didn't want to crowd the forums with another topic.

Is anyone still or considering playing this? I saw it recently drop on steam, watched a few videos, and began downloading it this morning. Testing it out with a few brave comrades would be nice. :)

I've been debating trying it out, given that its been recently updated and whatnot, but I'm not sure if I want to do all that sort of grinding.  I got dispirited really fast from Star Conflict for that very reason.

Isn't this the game where everything is boobs? Like, the scantily-cladwear is scantier and the busts bustier and the skin showier?

You are probably thinking Scarlet Blade.

Riding dragons sounds like fun, but I'll have to wait till I buy myself a new hard drive. :(

Nope, found it, Dragon's Prophet is what I was thinking of.
I try for a little semblance of realism or at least consistency in my fantasy RPGs, and the chicks basically being only eye candy kinda ruins that.

Oh. Well I guess that's becoming a standard of modern MMORPGs or what?
Then again, it is Asian MMORPG and I think silly things like that are pretty much given in those cases. :\

I gave this a try a few months back, and granted, some of it might have been fixed since then, but it was pretty terrible. Poor writing and acting in the cutscenes. Triggers for the cutscenes just simply weren't thought out very well. Graphical glitches everywhere and the combat system was bland at best. Felt like any other generic MMORPG clone out there just with Sony's name slapped on it and the feeling that they expected people to love it simply because of that.

I will admit, it takes something pretty special in the MMORPG department to actually grab my attention but this game just seemed below average or poor on every respect if compared to its contemporaries.
