Diverse Animal Domestication
« on: June 25, 2013, 07:44:15 pm »

Right now, all dwarf civilizations have a list of domesticated creatures, and a list of creatures they are generally familiar with. As a small suggestion, allow some of these GF creatures to become fully domesticated during world gen. It isn't the culture arc, but it would certainly pose an interesting dilemma during embark, and would help make your civ's caravan much more interesting if they brought fully tamed cave crocodiles.

I understand that it is disappointing when a dwarf makes a spiked loincloth instead of an axe.

I'd rather see the bug that makes it impossible to domesticate a species yourself be fixed.

That's not a bug, it's a design decision for now due to how domesticated animals and their breeds work.

With the next release won't we be able to potentially export Giant Black Bear cages and be able to order them from the caravans once we've saturated the market enough?

I'm reasonably sure there is nothing in the next release that will change either the market or caravans.

Really?  Shit.  I was told stopping at General Familiarity was unintended behaviour, and looking forward to that ending.

I thought I had read somewhere that our exports would change what is buyable in the world next release, maybe it was wishful thinking.

You can locally domesticate, but not domesticate on a civ scale. I know that cause I did it with wild boars. Man, that was a LOT of bacon.

Yes, I've done local domestication too.  I had one fortress where everything was made of badger parts.  Including the weapons, armor, and guardian animals.  Would be nice to be able to embark later from the same civilization and bring along some of those critters, though.

Hmm, maybe tamed exotic animals could be a trade good from your civ if you retired the fort instead of abandoning it? To have such animals domesticated for your whole civ (and have them available at embark) it'd make sense that your animal-training fort would have to become the mountainhome.

I guess for the animals to be exotic, their wide-spread adoption would have to be severely limited, in most cases due to rarity, or danger. :/
