This makes me wonder if my restless mason will be any use to me. ;)

Doesn't quite have the ring of heroics to it...

It would be a good idea to backup a copy of the game save btw. This is a truly unique situation.

......

If the dwarf dies before mooding, and becomes "useful haunt", can the ghost mood?

I seriously, seriously doubt it. Something like a ghost mooding would be obvious and remarkable - it'd pause the game for Armok's sake. We would have seen it before.

Oh my god, :o just imagine that situation, when your moody ghost doesn't get the required materials in time, and goes berserk! A berserking creature without body, passing trough walls and disappearing whenever he wants... just to reappear moments later in the front of his next victim... now that would be a really scary haunt!
...if it would be possible for a game with ascii graphics to be scary.

If Urist McFriendlyGhost can be any vocation (so far fishers and animal tamers have been reported), it is theoretically possible that UristMcFriendlyGhost could be a hammer dwarf too. The exact nature and cause of friendly ghosts that do work needs to be investigated, to see if it can be triggered as an exploit for science.
The Queen mandates the construction of certain goods. There are no Dwarves left in her halls.
The goblins arrive. They see the Queen sitting on her throne.
They expect to hear her surrender. Puzzled, they hear her shout the mandate has expired and they are sentenced to face the judiciary system.
Ghostly arms appear from the walls and the floor, dragging the goblins into the unbearable depths of the mountain, imprisoned beneath immeasurable mass. Unlike the Dwarves, they cannot die from old age.

So... put all the dwarves in a temporary suspended fortress.  When a migrant wave arrives, collapse said suspended fortress.  All of your dwarves then become useful haunts.  If there's a vampire in the migrant wave, seal him away to keep the fort alive, and enjoy your ghostly fortress.

...If this works as has been speculated.

Did someone mention weaponization?

I can't do this on my current embark because no ocean but I'm pretty sure this is the best thing ever.

OK, so, my Ghost Animal Trainer was on his way to tame an Aye-Aye Man during a goblin ambush. He was carrying a piece of meat, and stepped on the bridge over the Necromancer-Infested Pit of Zombie Death just after another dorf had pulled the lever.

The good news is that he didn't fall into the NIPZD.

The bad news is that for the next few months, he floated there, holding his piece of meat. Then for the few months after that, he floated on the Z level above.

Finally, I slabbed him as a sort of 'reset button.' I deconstructed the slab immediately, but he hasn't come back yet. We'll see if he's still friendly when he does.

That is too awesome. The last ghost I had was an omen for the destruction of my fort which happened shortly after its appearance.

If I had to guess, he was a caravan merchant who was stuck outside and got butchered by a titan/megabeast/siege. The body could have been incinerated (if you had a dragon or firebreathing titan that either breathed fire on him or caused a forest fire that destroyed his body).

Alternatively he could have been a citizen with the job title of "Trader". Even so, you can't set him to be your broker because he's dead. Maybe if you set the depot to "anyone can trade" and lock all of your citizens in the fort with no way to the depot, he might go to trade. You could try experiment with that.

If you just want to get rid of him, you don't need his body anyway. You could just create a slab at the mason's shop and then engrave it at the craftsdwarves' shop, then build the memorial (alt-s) somewhere.

maybe is how they die? otherwise every fisher and tamer who've died would be coming back as ghostly labour...

Maybe it has to do with how the fisher labour works?, fishers and hunters and I presume tamers get stuck on their job until completion, failing or getting sleepy/thirsty/hungry, maybe if they get killed while doing their jobs they get stuck on it even in the afterlife?

Let's say UristMcFisher is fishing and he gets a goblin arrow through the brain before being interrupted?

i would like to point out that a dwarves personality effects what type of ghost they will be, they need to be nice in life to be nice in death
so dont go letting your grouchy fisher have fun with gobbos, else he be shoving his pole (no innuendo intended) through your skull when he comes back

Holy necro threads, Batman!  We must have embarked near a Tower.

I'm new to succession forts in general, yes, but do all forts designed by multiple overseers inevitably degenerate into a body-filled labyrinth of chaos and despair like this? Or is this just a Battlefailed thing?

There isn't much middle ground between killed-by-dragon and never-seen-by-dragon.
