Is there a way to check what an individual dwarf is wearing or carrying?

Press [v]iew, navigate your yellow X to be over the dwarf you wish to examine, press [v] again if necessary to cycle through multiple creatures on the same tile, and finally press [i]nventory to see what you wish to see.
