And, to be honest, sometimes the only advice really is 'get better at the game'. Like if you keep losing in Mario Kart because you keep bumping into obstacles, turn too sharply into corners, etc. or whatever... then yeah, gitting gud is about the only thing you can do.

Because it is impossible to type things such as: "Decelerate when entering a turn to so you can take the corner at a clean angle?" or  "Run the track a few times as a warmup before you seriously try to win on it, so that you are aware of the obstacles ahead of time."?

No.  I reject this assertion with every fiber of my being.  If a person isn't going to offer constructive criticism or advice then they shouldn't even post.  The 'git gud' mentality is pure unadulterated arrogance and should be given the short stake.

That's all well and good when it's being used jokingly, but I almost never witness that use at this point.  Everything I see is someone going: "I didn't have any problem with that, you must just suck", and calling that anything other than being an asshole is simply false.

*Been playing Skyrim again*

Mine for the day:

Unrealistic wildlife. Specifically, carnivores.

Bears are territorial. They are not going to attack in groups.  They certainly arent going to keep attacking after getting a huge assed fireball in the face.
Carnivores in general are dependent upon game populations. They cannot be thick as damn fleas; they will starve to death.  Given that humans in this game can shoot fireballs into their faces, they should be a bit timid around humans. (See also, existing real world populations being timid of humans, because humans have boom-sticks.) But apparently, that just doesn't fly-- the carnivores all act like they have rabies distemper, and lash out at every damn thing they see.

Game developers:  If you are going to make wild animal attacks be part f your game mechanics, GET IT FUCKING RIGHT, OK?

You get disease when attacked by wildlife though, so they’ve clearly been driven mad by being a breeding ground for horrific ailments.

It’d be cool if they ran off ‘cause you were a werewolf though.

Except the diseases in the game are (for the most part) not ones that would induce psychosis, so that explanation falls flat.

"Oh, I caught ringworm!! It makes my fur fall out and stuff! TIME TO RAMPAGE!!"

Yeah. You can see how that is dumb.

It is just a little annoying that anytime you're playing a game and you see a wolf, you can probably assume that wolf is going to fight you to the death for no reason.
It breaks my immersion when enemies seem to have no self-preservation or goals other than to hit you until you kill them.

Wildlife in Skyrim also suffers from 'takes an axe to the face and still keeps coming' syndrome.  There are no wound systems in place to prevent animals from theoretically fleeing and healing.  Or om-noming you and then healing.  And since _most_ npcs in the game are not level 70 mage-warrior-archers who are also the dovakin vampire werewolf who also is head of the dark brotherhood _and_ Thane of three counties and pretender to the throne of Skyrim . . . well, most npcs are absolutely fair game for wildlife who naturally outpower them.

Ask not 'how come animals are thick as trees and aggressive to the humies', but rather 'why are there still people around at all'?  'how come nobody talks about the disappearances that must be happening, since frost trolls can literally kill ice dragons'?  'When a mammoth and a giant pwn a dragon, is that where they get their giant skeleton decorations from'?



P:  which reminds me, my pet peeve is games where you can do anything, and it just ends up being everything that gets done in one playthrough.  My most fun character in skyrim wasn't the battlemage, or the crusader, or even the hunter, it was the necromancer argonian who used no armor and a hide shield all game.  Guy was in melee more than the hunter was!

It bothers me immensely when a game has badly balanced running/walking. Like, this is a very broad problem, but games constantly screw it up:

- Walking is so incredibly slow that it's completely useless, even for precision purposes. Best example I can think of is Stardew Valley's ridiculously slow walk and somewhat frustratingly slow run.
- Both animations fail to sync up correctly to the floor, usually because the characters move faster than the animation. Xenoblade Chronicles immediately jumps to mind--Shulk's goofy run animation, outside of its silly appearance, never seems to line up with the ground as he moves.
- One of the buttons used to walk/run, or the act of walking or running itself, is multipurpose, interrupting gameplay. I can excuse NES games because there were only four face buttons, but this still occasionally crops up--my first thought is the Ezio trilogy of Assassin's Creed games, where walking fast makes you pickpocket people.
- On that note, when the player moves slower or faster than characters they're supposed to escort or follow--this crops up everywhere, but I recall that Assassin's Creed was terrible about this, having tons of escort missions, stalking missions, and walk-and-talk sequences where you constantly have to stop walking or take a weird zigzag route so the other person can catch up to you.

A hero of mine in Darkest Dungeon caught Syphilis after a night at the brothel. This is understandable.

Another hero of mine in Darkest Dungeon caught Syphilis after being vomited on by a pig-thing in the Warrens. This is not-so-understandable.

Of course, diseases in Darkest Dungeon aren't handled realistically either, but that's a bit outside the scope of the rants going on right now.

One thing I really liked about The Forest was that the cannibals wouldn't just blindly rush in upon sighting you (at least art the start...), but would instead carefully scope you out from a distance, try to stay on your flanks, and then maybe run up behind you to tag your skull before retreating.

Which is not only much more realistic, it's also really damn creepy. Looking up to see figures in the treeline just standing there, watching... Guh.

And then you know that you have to either kill them all, or someone will run back to the village and inform the others, sending a larger party. And even if you DO manage to kill all of them before anyone can escape, they'll send out a search party to find the dead patrol.

...but then you get the animals, who run backwards or just spin around your feet. So, swings and roundabouts.

In much the same way bandits will attack you when you've killed half their buddies, and guards will fight you when you're clearly superior but punched a chicken.

Is it fun if every wild animal you saw just ran away? Some breaks in reality are acceptable.

A game which prides itself on RP value has animals it encourages you to hunt that do not run away . . .


I mean, I guess.  That sort of nonsense is exactly the issue with skyrim though.  It makes these concessions.  'you delivered a letter across town!  Here's enough gold for 2 months rent at the flophouse!'

Yeah, that's Skyrim, a game that expects you to treat it like a fantasy hack and slash adventure, not a simulation. Are there elements of simulation in Skyrim that I'm not aware of that could have misled anyone about what the game's intent is?

Not that I wouldn't prefer smarter AI in Skyrim's enemies in general, but really there are worse problems the game has that hurt the RP value than the behavior and placement of the animals.

I wish someone would make a realistic hunting mod. Animals will flee from your scent, mostly before you can see them. If you wound one, it runs away so you have to spend hours tracking it. That sounds like the best use of my gaming time, right there.
