The difference is Nenjin is outside their HORRIBLE overly sexualized outfits the other characters aren't really... sexy so to speak... Nor does the game extensively objectify them.

Milena on the other hand IS that character.

I think you seriously underestimate the attraction of it to the average male gamer. I liked to test the guys I played MMOs with, or any game where they'd opt to play female characters. I'd ask them why. And at least 50% of the time the answer I'd get was "If I'm going to spend this much time staring at a character, I want to be looking at some T&A."

No, the answer you probably got is they looked better. If you did get the TnA answer it is probably because they thought it might be an accusation.

The fact that men in MMOs are big ugly hulks and women are... well... lets face it... Gorgeous... Is not something lost on gamers. Yet even then, wanting to play someone who kicks butt and is attractive? That sounds like the typical human power fantasy.

Yet even then... don't forget Nenjin that you introduced "Male Gamer" into this. So is this a uniquely male thing?

Playing as a man is boring. I'm a man in real life. It's like playing as a human when there's orcs, elves, hobbits and dwarves available.

That is honestly a big part of it. In The Sims I like female sims mostly because they got the better selection of clothes.

I just don't think it is anywhere near as sexually driven as Nenjin implies (and by implies I mean outright states)

No, I can't really claim it is, only because there's examples to disprove it. But generally speaking? Yes, it's a male thing. There's no market for male beefcake video games, no trend in large gaming culture that's visible to everyone, that says it crosses gender lines. When I've seen anything close to it, it's clearly a joke.

And enter stage right, apparently.

Beefcake is actually more of a male thing as odd as that sounds.

Which is kind of a weird thing culturally because it is ALWAYS brought up as a great symbol of male sexuality. Yet it is a form of male sexuality that appeals largely to other males and not women.

So when you see Beefcake especially sexual beefcake in a videogame... Remember... That is for the dudes.

There are male characters that appeal to women... But the thing is you have to separate the hyperbolic male sex fantasy males from the ones women are genuinely attracted to.

Or rather... Men IN GENERAL are more attracted to visual hypersexuality then women.

That doesn't mean that "Damn the sexy" is unique to men. Only that the version for women isn't a "direct opposite" but a latitude movement.

Think of it this way... Does a Super Large Breasted woman appeal to women in general? Not really (though not exactly men either... but whatever averages).

It's not about whether they're attracted to a character. It's how character designers and writers form that attraction. For women, it doesn't involve stripping them down naked for half the game, I don't think.

I mean, I remember growing up and seeing trashy romance novel covers in boxes in storage. It's not like women aren't attracted by the same kinds of things men are. It's about how far designers will overplay those things and whether or not that works on the demographic. For women, it doesn't seem like it works because it's not really common in the gaming space. For men though, it works and so you see it proliferate.

It really doesn't work as much as you think.

The ONLY game that sells on sleeze is dead or alive volleyball.

Any popular game is typically popular because it was good... Not because of the eye candy.

Since as I said the typical western response in videogames is "She is sexy, get over it" and they move on. Games do not typically sit on this fact or feel the need to bring it up.

Though I know "Alone in the Dark" is the very first videogame to create a female protagonist constructed for a female audience... and she is middle aged, well studied, wears a skirt, and is generally attractive.

No, but eye candy can help an already popular game be more popular with the right demographic. And it can get an unpopular game a few sales, where it might not have gotten any at all.

Like, do you think every GTA cover since San Andreas has some sexy chick somewhere, or front and center, because it's not effective?

Hey Nenjin how overflowing are the sexy chicks in the game? Ohh wait that is right they aren't really all that prevalent.

Besides as I said Nenjin... Western games like to have a Car Model Woman who poses next to the car... Yet the focus is always on the car. If she is in the car the game doesn't ask her bra size, is asks her if she can drive the car.

The game doesn't thrust boobs into your face.

Played a GTA game lately? They overflow plenty, even the pedestrians, and the strip clubs are pretty lavishly detailed. There are no female main characters, but the supporting female characters aren't exactly balanced examples of them. I'm playing GTA 5 right now and while it's not chain mail bikinis or anything, they're not average in their attributes.

On the side doesn't count. That is definition of "Who cares?" :P

But sure lets compare games shall we?

There is Saints Row IV which is by FAR a much more skeezy game that constantly shoots hookers and large breasted women at you.
Versus
Grand Theft Auto V which mostly... puts it on the side outside set dressing once in a while...

1 million sales first week
Versus over 12 million first week

Well, GTA generally exploits controversy to sell more copies and you can always expect a fair amount from either SJW or people who have a more puritanical viewpoint if you have a 'sexy chick' on the cover.
