It looks like Randall Munroe is a huge fan, too. Great advertisement.   :)

This is the future of Dwarf Fortress.

This is a side-effect of dwarven animal training (hit animal with hammer until it forgets that it hates you, then lovingly cuddle it).

The BEST part, is that we've been designing computers in Dwarf Fortress using pressure plates, water, and floodgates.

So what you are saying is, the Machines actually got their start as...
The BEST part, is that we've been designing computers in Dwarf Fortress using pressure plates, water, and floodgates.

And... they are punishing humanity for the atrocities commited in Dwarf Fortress?

This lends credence to the notion that we are all playing an advanced simulation of a game created by an advanced species controlled by a greater government holding together the illusion of reality as part of a simulation created by an even more advanced species and so on...

Wanna pull the cobaltite lever? Go ahead then. I'll be happy with the bauxite one.

You'll find Dwarf Fortress and Dark Souls references in a surprisingly staggering number of places.  Both are fairly unique games in their own right with incredibly challenging gameplay that usually isn't shared with others.  DF is purely single player, and DS has no in-game chat and only multiplayer briefly if at all, unlike MMOs where things get done in big bold letters about who's playing.
