              YARR HARR YE SCALLYWAGS OF BAY12,
  I come seeking advice from the best.  I'm considering buying the new indie title 'Folk Tale' in it's Early Release thingy-ma-bob on Steam, so I was wondering if anyone had any of their OWN dangerous opinions to voice and risk being shot down in flames.  Now if this post has already been made and the Search I did turned up faulty, someone please direct me in the right direction and launch this OP into the next Oblivion.  If, however, BY SOME LUCKY STARS, a Folk Tale thread has not been started, consider this also a discussion topic and enjoy.

I am kind of angry since I signed up for Beta and it seems like they ended up not having one unless you pay, it was just a ploy to send out a newsletter.

I haven't played it, but one of the first trailers kind of turned me off towards it. It's obviously aiming for Dungeon Keeper levels of humor, but it fails to realize that Dungeon Keeper's humor was a bit more than a few memes and wonky villager comments. It certainly didn't do anything to make me interested in the game play, since it looks outright dull. Humor is fine in a game, but the game play should come first.

Keep in mind that if you buy the game now, only the tutorial is available. That alone makes me cautious.

What helped Dungeon Keeper is while it wasn't THAT funny, it used its comedy to build a atmosphere and tied it into the game mechanics. Many of the funny jokes made sense within the context of what was happening and helped with the detached aspect of your dungeon denizens.

Majesty too, it had a strong comedic element with missions such as a spell that caused everyone to become stupid and a team of monsters called phonetically "sticks and stones". It however also had strong serious elements and while it tried to gather a chuckle here and there it did however treat itself very seriously. Then Majesty 2 was released and changed the game from "comedic elements" into an outright comedy game.

+1 for trashing Majesty 2.

Folk Tale appears to have spent WAY too much work on graphical fluff. It doesn't seem too fun.

And underworld/overworld games have always done badly IMO. Having adventure mode in a city sim/RTS is not a good idea.

I hate the voice acting in the trailers also.

More on the graphics. It has the graphical template of an RPG game which doesn't go well with city planning. Its simply too much detail.

I don't see it as a city builder because there are designated spots for building stuff (which I personally don't particularly like) and their dungeon system looks really well done with the individual abilities  and micro-managing loot.  I went ahead and bought it anyway because anyone who knows me well will know that's just me :D  and I liked the tutorial (although I spent most of the time just zooming in and watching my plebs walk in and out of buildings) SO HUZZAH

I believe that, in the current form, there is only around 30 minutes of playability before you need to restart.

I know the point of the Early Access program is that you pay your money to support the development, but there needs to be some sort of a trade-off - and I don't think it's there yet for this.

Can you elaborate for people who don't have time to play the game themselves? Why is there a cutoff? Is the long game not implemented? Do the systems not provide enough variation?

As I said above, it's only my belief - but a quick look on the Steam forums presents the fact that currently only the tutorial is playable and many of the core mechanics are not yet implemented.

But as with all Early Access games - you're paying now to help the devs, not to just get the game. Think of it as Kickstarter but with an immediately playable part of the game, albeit not a large/finished one.

So its mostly that its not far along rather than that the gameplay is shallow. That's not too awful.

Right now only the tutorial is playable. I've only tried it out for some 20 minutes, so my opinion is maybe not very valuable.

The camera control is confusing, I guess this can be fixed but as it is right now is annoying enough to not making me want to finish the tutorial. Graphics are quite neat though.
The "sandbox" aspect needs to be improved drastically - right now it's as much sandbox as Warcraft or Age of Empires.

I'll be keeping an eye on it, but there's just not enough to do right now to form any kind of veredict.

Actually their entire design philosophy has changed. The game is now purely sandbox.
