Z level question in regards to the caverns
« on: May 27, 2013, 11:48:01 pm »

Well at my current embark site i am on top of a mountain where the top z level is 112 and the bottem of it is 99. Do i have to go down 99 z levels to hit the caverns?

Very unlikely.  The topmost cavern is sometimes quite close to the surface.  Dig down and explore, you can always wall off any breach.

My current embark is a tall mountain where the highest tip of the mountain is at Z151.  First caverns are at -4 or so.  So I would say yes.

That's pretty not-typical.

it's random, i have seen the caverns 100z levels below the surface, but it's nearly always 30z levels or less

<shrug>

I searched (and embarked) on a highly mountainous terrain (indicators were for 30+ Zlevels), so whether that makes a difference...

That's pretty cool.  Did that turn out to be a good or bad thing for your fortress?

mostly just harassment problems from cave dwellers and lost a dwarf to a troglodyte. fortunately my dwarves did not follow it all the way down to trigger the cavern discovery but somehow manage to trigger discovery of the magma sea....
