Noble succession Overhauling help
« on: May 22, 2013, 11:20:24 pm »

I need your help with a little project that I am working on. After losing my heirless king/duke repeatedly die to the hippie menace or a terrible accident involving an ape and a some spears. I decided I wanted to change the noble system abit. What I am probably going for should the king/duke were to meet his end and no heir is present I would like to make the king/duke/count apointable by me or a lower noble.  or worse case if my civilization is lacking a king, appoint a king from within. Also I would like to separate the count from the duke to create 3 positions within the fort.

So how will I go about doing this? I Have been looking into the entity but I'm clueless.

have you read
http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/DF2012:Position_token
?

for example, it sounds like you want to experiment with removing "REPLACED_BY" on your count and baron.

OK that will probably solve the seperating the count from the Duke position, but how will I go about making the king appointed by me if there is no heir to be found I notice the APPOINTED_by tag but it doesn't give me much to go on.

I don't know for sure that you can, since the king is an entity level noble, and the player only represents site level nobles.

back in 40d I remember that a monarch was choosen at random if they died in your fortress if no heirs were to be found.

I've never experimented with this. So good luck.

So a new king can't be appointed by within just in case he dies? Well that sucks but I guess I will have to do the next best thing a create a new Position entirely maybe a Grand Prince and/or Archduke. But before I go on that road, by deleting the replace by tag, on the count, baron, and duke I can create seperate positions rather than a deleting them entirely right?

I don't guarantee it will work, but that's what i would try first.

well removing the REPLACE_BY will prevent them from being lost/replaced so when a Mayor comes he won't replace the exp. leader, and so on and so forth.

You could try adding APPOINTED_BY:HIGH_PRIEST and make a high priest noble that is appointed by the mayor, exp.leader, baron, and duke all at once (so you just need one of them) of course with the SUCCESSION:BY_HEIR you might be able to create your own noble line is said monarch is dead, this is just theory but if:

the old king and line of successors die (family wiped out) you could appoint Urist McFarmer as the king and him, his wife, and his kids are now all royality and their blood line is the new royalty. Just theory and curious now on attempting this myself.

An idea. Make an "advisor" noble appointed by king who can appoint other nobles related to king (or maybe a king itself, or replace him?). I've never experimented with this enough, it should be a worthy test.

Sounds like a good idea. I'll added with my warrior noble.

So yeah, it was just a random thought, but now I think I know what to do.

The monarch is needed to appoint counts, dukes etc.

You can do it a different way.

1) Monarch, as it is.
2) Advisor, appointed by monarch, appoints baron, duke, count.
3) Regent, appointed by advisor, same duties as for monarch. You can appoint him in case your king/queen dies and there's nobody to inherit the throne (or if the children are too young).

My template

   [REQUIRED_BEDROOM:10000]
   [REQUIRED_DINING:10000]
   [REQUIRED_TOMB:10000]

I essentially introverted the Duke succession rule which is:
 [SUCCESSION:BY_HEIR]
      [APPOINTED_BY:MONARCH]
      [PRECEDENCE:20]
      [SPECIAL_BURIAL]
      [MENIAL_WORK_EXEMPTION]

hopefully this will achieve the effect I am looking for which should their be no heir I can start a new dynasty on the fly.
