Minimum number of dwarves you can have
« on: May 16, 2013, 10:30:00 pm »

Hey, everyone.

I know that there are ways to embark that prevents migrants, and that the first two waves are hard-coded, and regardless of what you set the pop cap at, once you dip below a certain number of dwarves more show up.

My question is; assuming you set the pop cap at 1, what is the minimum number of dwarves you can have before the game sends an migrant wave?

Well, zero, but then you'd have lost the fort. It's why it's a pop cap. The maximum you can have is somewhere between 20-30.

Assuming you still have the fort kept alive, what is the minimum?

Hermit challenges usually run into this problem, since new migrants always show up regardless of the cap.

Even then, I believe one of the Battlefailed series of forts was surviving for a while without any dwarves.

Edit: Here we are.

Okay, well, assuming I set pop cap to one, how few dwarves can I have before more show up?

More shouldn't ever show up, assuming the pop cap gets properly updated by a caravan.

If you have less than 4 dwarves, the Population Cap is ignored.  It might work if you're located somewhere your civiliation can't access

You're right! The 4 dwarves rule create a hard-coded migration wave for you.

The first two migrant waves are also hardcoded, IIRC.

The pop cap has a lot of holes in it in general. Babies, for one, still get born past even the hard limit under some conditions.

The population cap _only_ affects migration, nothing else. Births are regulated by the child cap, and the only loopholes in that seem to be pregnant immigrants and _maybe_ pregnancies already in progress when the cap was hit, although i have my doubts on the latter.

Setting the population cap to one is also illegally low - the game treats it as having no population cap at all, afaik. At least i was getting migrants to a nine-dwarf fort, when playing with a cap of seven would have produced none.

Alright, then, what is the lowest you can set the pop cap to and have it still be recognized? 4?

I'm currently running a fortress on an island and there is no place for the hardcoded migrants to come in from.  No wagons either.

So, minimum is seven.

The hardcoded must get to there there's no open land to they Spawn, just that...
