I guess I can compare it to how the MLP fandom has/is being received

In MLP's case I think it was more that people wanted someone to hate and people saw that as an easy target.

I mean I've seen the show and it is hilariously terrible most of the time ("What someone just flew in and had to pull in a full days work? LETS PARTY! Yeah that is exactly what they need!") but I don't see anything too bad and can see why adult males like the show.

With the Furry Fandom however it was because of an extreme minority being thrown as the representative of the entire fandom. In a VERY similar way to how people who played, lets say, dungeons and dragons for a while (Perceived as Satanists).

MLP however? There isn't this misunderstanding or false representation... People just wanted someone to pick on and chose a target people wouldn't be offended attacking.
