There are more threats in the galaxy than just the civilized alien races. Today we get to experience some of them.

The mercs are indecisive about our mutually beneficial terms of cooperation. In the mean while, we introduce the galaxy to Human Porn and make profits. In this context I up the combat ability of all ship patterns and introduce the Printsip pursuer.

Fun fact:
Von Neumanns are NOT classified as AIs, because they are actually extremely advanced mining operation programs, whose only purpose is 'mine and build more miners'.
Even the Locusts are actually not AIs.

...

I kind of want to see which grand menace ends up popping up.
Unless you played it a-la DF setting...
WITH ALL OF THEM!

I don't see why having a single purpose should disqualify something from AI-hood. If it's a self-sufficient process that can make decisions based on external circumstances, then it's an AI.
I think the Transhuman Space gradation is a good tool in such discussion, I.e., Non-sapient, Low-sapient and sapient AI. Or NAI, LAI and SAI respectively. I'd class Von Neumann as LAI, because they show some manner of restraint even when there's no resistance left, but they're far from the ability to set their own goals.

Yeah, low sapient.
Or at least very slow sapient. They're mapping probes that respond to threats against them ... eventually.

Destroy Von Neumann.
Get Von Neumann Berserker two or three turns later.
Learn the lesson:
Never mess with Von Neumann.

sad thing of the berserker is that since you can practically get them after turn fifty...unless you got lucky with the rolls you just end up getting curbstomped.
It particularly hurts if the Von Neumann are after your homeworld, and you've got overharvesting as a need for more ships.

The reports from the colonies talk of a Liir force arriving at our rocky shore. Rest easy in knowing that our brave spacemen and women took care of the incursion. And to prevent any future attacks, our great leader has ordered the engineers to start work on an entirely new class of vessel.
