Lower water level?
« on: May 03, 2013, 07:54:44 am »

I'm trying to create a castle type fort. I got literally the best embark in the history of embarks for that purpose - two streams form a Y shape, with the section between the two streams being elevated. However, it's only elevated above one of the streams - the other is at the same level as my fort. It's a temperate area, so in winter that stream freezes over and goblins can cross. How can I lower the water level so that it's a level below me?

If I wait for winter, set up a wall where the ice is near the start, then channel out the ice and the level below, will this cause the stream to be a level lower on the other side of the wall?

Yes.

Remember to leave a way for the water to flow off the map; this is an issue since you won't be able to channel out the very last map-edge tile where the stream exits.

However, if the edge tile is rock, you can carve a fortification in it, which will let the stream flow out. So, consider lowering the end of the stream all the way down to a rock layer.

He's already got a waterfall, he's just going to lower the top of the waterfall by one z-level.  It should drain out the same way it already does.

If it was me if just build a wall along the stream and make the goblins walk round to invade. You see this sort of design all the time in real castles - check out this pic of Warwick castle, for example.

I would wait for winter, then you can channel out the ice of the frozen stream, and lower the riverbed by 1 level.  You'll need to probably modify the place where the stream flows out to avoid problems as well.

Because the water makes that side the most defensible, all of the staterooms and living quarters are facing it.

While adding magma to anything will make it dwarfy, adding the word "magma" to your post does not necessarily make it funny.
