Roll to Threads! So it begins...
« on: April 20, 2013, 01:50:18 am »

Its in the 80s, tensions between USA and the Soviet union rises to the point where small scale nuclear arms has been exchanged in the middle east. This is escalating quite rapidly. You live in the industrial city of Sheffield, wich in itself is a strategic target due to the industry, with an RAF airbase nearby, wich is indeed also a target. Its a normal Thuesday in Sheffield, you are doing your usual business when suddenly the sirens wail, beckoning the citizens to take shelter.

Rules: Dont make a character like "NOOKLEAR HOWLOWKAWST SURVIVAH xDDDD", you are a normal citizen, or a soldier.
Disclaimer: This is only loosely based around the movie "Threads", i know jackshit about Sheffield and i will take alot of artistic freedom about locations and stuff, feel free to consult a nuclear attack survival guide though, ive done alot of research on that.

Character sheet:

Name:
Age:
Health condition:
Occupation: Civilllian occupation/Military position that isnt GENERAL NOOK XDDDDDD
Attack Preparedness: Ignorant, Aware, Informed
Description: (Describe how they have been, what they have been thinking about the events leading up to the event, what they are thinking now, feel free to give a short summary of where they grew up, wich school they went to, etc)

Remember: Chances are you will die in the first turn. Your initial action decides the most.

Name: Dave Johnson
Age: 27
Health condition: A bit snotty, coughs a bit at times, has a bruise on his foot from yesterday when a muffler fell on it.
Occupation: Mechanic
Attack Preparedness: Informed
Description: Dave has been down with a cold the weeks following up to now, a few days ago he got fresh and just got back to work. Initially he didnt care much, thought it was jsut saber rattling. However as the events escalated he got more and more worried, he started listening to the public information broadcasts, read the flyers, the manuals, even had a talk with his old physics teacher about it. The other guys called him paranoid, and he was starting to question his sanity too, untill now, now they will see.. oh wait maybe its a test.

Name: Linda McPhearson
Age: 25
Health condition: suffers from mild schizophrenia, takes anti-psychotic medication for it regularly - if medication isn't taken, paranoia, mild delusions and sometimes even auditory hallucinations manifest. Otherwise healthy.
Occupation: Housewife
Attack Preparedness: Aware (dimly)
Description: as the world around her quickly neared its fiery judgment, Linda remained mostly ignorant of what was going on around her. It really has not been the best of times for her - her father was diagnosed with late stage pancreatic cancer at age 44, and she makes regular trips to nearby Tickhill where he is hospitalized while her 9-year-old son Julian and husband Tom are both busy at school and work, respectively. During the constant rush and panic of the last week, she hardly even noticed the rush and panic of the rest of the world. Indeed, she was actually starting her daily trip to Tickhill and about to get on the M1 by car when the alarms started to sound - she certainly knew that there was some kind of panic in the air, but the grim reality of it only struck when she heard the signals.

Name: Edmund Brown
Age: 37
Health condition: Slight heart condition.
Occupation: Journalist
Attack Preparedness: Informed
Description: By necessity of his job, Edmund has been painfully aware of the oncoming situation. As the possibility of war grew more and more distinct, he became more and more stressed, even starting to smoke again, much to his wife's disapproval. For the last few days, he's simply been trying to keep people informed of the looming threat with the occasional newspaper article.

When the sirens went off, he was just wrapping up writing some dull little fluff article in his office.

Name: Peter Sloan
Age: 28
Health condition: In a state of perfect health.
Occupation: Wing Commander (served at the nearby airbase)
Attack Preparedness: Informed
Description: In the past few weeks leading up to the attack, Peter had been in charge of preparing the RAF airbase for the situation. He has been properly, therefore, under a lot of stress, as he hasn't the slightest idea what he could do to protect the airbase besides stockpiling food and other goods inside of the base's nuclear shelter, which was already chock full of the sh*t. As such, for the past few weeks, he had been forced to do nothing but run three or four drills every week to prepare the cadets to evacuate into the shelter quickly.

Never fear, Remalle is here!
I don't even know what a Threads is.

Name: Remy Maelle
Age: 22
Health condition: Asthma, eczema, hypochrondria
Occupation: GENERAL NOOK Part-time student, part-time fry cook, failing musician
Attack Preparedness: Ignorant
Description: NOOKLEAR HOWLOWKAWST SURVIVAH A perpetual failure and loser, Maelle (as he prefers to be called) has always kept away from the affairs of others, even if those others happen to be angry Soviets with nukes.  As a result, Maelle has no idea what's going on in the world and has no idea of what to make of the sudden air raid sirens that are interrupting his busking session.
For the last few years Maelle's goals have been as follows: make money, in order to finish school, in order to please the parents, so they'll allow parties to be thrown, so booze and sex will always be readily available without having to actually become a successful musician.  Because the only way Maelle could ever become a successful musician would be if he were caught embarrassing himself on some memetic YouTube video, and the Internet doesn't even exist yet.

Hey DrPoo, welcome to the RTD subboard :D

Yeah, ill bump it again. If nobody signs up ill just start it with the few we have already.
Things take a while here - interested players are usually separated by either viewing the board itself for new games, or timezones. The latter holds for the majority of players, usually.

Things take time here, but its mostly time well spent. That said, I'll PTW this.

Name: Joe Johnson
Age: 30
Health condition: heavy smoker, so the usual effects of that
(lung damage, increased risk of cancer, etc)
Occupation: lance corporal, RAF ground crew.
Attack preparedness: semi-aware (the brass caps seem increasingly worried for some reason... And the others say that there have been a lot of drills recently....)
Description: Just back from a short leave with the wife and kids, Joe arrived back yesterday to a much busier-than-usual scene, with his workmates hurriedly exclaiming about the suspicious activities recently. Damn. Should have stayed in Blackpool, then.

EDIT - is currently smoking in an area behind the tool shed. His friends don't like him smoking near them, apparently the smoke smells funny or something.

I would ask why fire can burn two men to death without getting hot enough to burn a book, but then I read "INEXTINGUISHABLE RUNNING KAMIKAZE RADIOACTIVE FLAMING ZOMBIE" and realized that logic, reason, and physics are all occupied with crying in the corner right now.

Forgot to specify what you are doing at the time the sirens start wailing. It will be crucial.

Name: Kira Oswald
Age: 21
Health condition: Healthy.
Occupation: RAF Wife (housewife to a RAF officer).
Attack Preparedness: Semi-Aware.
Description: Not much bothers Kira. She is friendly, helpful and happy. She isnt much bothered by the little wars going on in the Middle East. She has just been trying to live her life like a normal person would. She is, however, a little nervous about the wars spreading to the rest of the world and causing the Cold War to go Hot.

Kira is from a wealthy Leodensian family who married a young but experienced officer in the RAF one year ago. She is well educated and does some freelance work here and there. She grew up in the suburbs of Leeds, and went ot the famed Leeds Grammar School. She is very close to her family. If anything happened to them she'd be heartbroken.

At the moment, though, she only has time for one thing. She is currently....indisposed with her husband in their bedroom, so the sirens came as a shock.
