I heard a story about Turkey! When the Muslims came to Constantinople, they saw a brown steer running through the streets, so they cried, "Look! Is tan bull!" The name quickly spread and here we are today.

Haha, I heard a lot of stories about the name. All of them sound stupid. One of them was about "hey, let's call this city İslambol (Turkish: Lots of Islam)" then it started to change by itself and got the name Istanbul. Kinda like You know = Y'know.

Well, they are much less active nowadays. Police is doing a good job at beating down people like that. They are not the most organized and effective underground organizations in the world. I mean, it's a bunch of high school kids what do you expect? They go to rallies pretty much only for better education. We have lots of Leninist (but anti-Stalinist) underground organizations.

All your first world countries and your advanced politics. Back in Nicaragua, we got ourselves some tasty wildlife, a rich culture, tinfoil roofs on our houses, and a big rainforest.

NICARAGGUA
It sounds so simple, I actually would like to live there.

It's a pretty simple country, where no one cares if you eat the illegal endangered species(turtle; which I've seen a family invite a police officer to eat over a fire)

Except the extremely corrupt government that doesn't care about it's citizens; it is a pretty nice third world country. Crime is such a problem, people hire the rebel forces to guard stores, restaurant, gas stations, and clubs.

But other than that, it is living a simple life of farming and eating quality(and cheap) beef.

Wow, Turkey sounds swell. Beating up nationalists in the name of Lenin? A city named Batman?! Sign me up!

But other than that, it is living a simple life of farming and eating quality(and cheap) beef.

Do you think people in Nicaragua, in general, seem content/happy with their lives? Or am I just being naive?

[/quote]Despite obvious poverty, people love to live in Nicaragua. They just hate the government, and don't like to live near other poor people. We have a decently rich culture that persists through the generations.

The only "Angry" people are the genuinely poor(Own nothing, orphans and hobos), people being hunted down by government for allegiance and money, and those who got their families injured or killed because of the regime.

That's very funny because it's true :D Being in the middle of Middle East, Asia and Europa doesn't only come with advantages. Everyone I know has a different opinion like "We came from Asia, so we are an Asian Turkish nation", "But we are culturally closer to West with all the westernization and stuff", "If we are going to speak about cultures, our religion and art makes us closer to Arabians" and it just goes on forever.

Most old Turkish people also distrust foreigners because of the whole every-major-country-tried-to-invade-us thing. Hell, we even have a saying "only friends of Turkish people are the Turkish people". The prejudices seem to be clearing with the new generation. I personally think Greeks are one of the most similar nations to Turkish nation and I can't really understand why there are STILL resentment from both sides.

We also filed a lawsuit against the real Batman for stealing our city's name! (true story, a mayor did it. It's amazing how many stupid politicians we have)

BTW, here's another one.

Turkey has nothing to do with Ottoman Empire. Turkey was formed by Turkish rebels fighting against Ottoman monarchists. Turkey was busy with infiltrating and destroying Ottoman Empire before turning their guns against the invaders. And even after Turkey was founded, there was a lot of infighting because everyone agreed that invaders and Ottoman Empire had to go but nobody agreed one what kind of ideology Turkey should be built on.

If you ask me, we can't even be friends with ourselves first :P

What, isn't Tukey the successor state to the Ottoman Empire? Sure, you overthrew your Caliph and made a Republic, but that doesn't make you a new country. France didn't become a new country when they chopped Louis's head.

Sure it is. But Turkey stands against everything Ottoman Empire stands for which includes invading the shit out of every country. That's what I was trying to tell.

I think a lot of the Turkish-Greek animosity stems from all those coastal Anatolian cities that were Greek colonies a couple thousand years ago. There's Greeks that feel much of Anatolia should belong to Magna Graecia (dunno what the Greek term is), and *would* have based on the Treaty of Sevres (specifically the region around Izmir). Turkey "proper" would have been a greatly reduced rump state in Phrygia, Galatia and Paphlagonia with no access to the Mediterranean.

So then when Ataturk forced the Allies to renegotiate from a position of weakness in 1923, you can see how a lot of countries felt "cheated" of land, especially Greece, Armenia and the Kurds (although it was never 100% clear that the Kurds were actually going to get their own country or not in 1920)
