So I never really figured out how to enter the chain that begins with Huntsman's Copse until I did everything else possible. For that reason, I never met the ladder builder and thus never got ladders down into the Grave of Saints. Instead, I got the Catfall Ring and a lot of health to survive just jumping down into it, at which point I preceded down the chain and killed The Rotten. Whoops! I'm wondering now if this had something do do with Grave of Saints resetting that one time.

This is rather like Dark Souls 1, where you could take the back entrance to Blighttown if you had the master key.  You can go either way, but one requires a bit of trickery.  The 'easy' way isn't always legit.

thats entirely how i did it, because screw huntsman cove. i didnt even know how to get to the boss of that area, i just assumed you had to go to the big stadium, and couldnt fight my way to it, so i said screw it, turned around, and finagled my way down that hole

Guys, would I be best off buying and playing the first game, well, first or should I just say "fuck it" and splurge on the sequel?

On the one hand, as far as I'm aware from what I've read, the lore relation between the two is limited to about two characters who are still around from the original.

On the other, if you play Dark Souls in the interim, you probably won't suck so terribly at the sequel once you get it.

Thanks, I ended up just going with that idea- mainly 'cause the first game is way less expensive to buy.
I plan on picking up a pre-owned copy of 2 next Tuesday, though.

the lore relation, if you read it, is From Software going: "huh? huh? remember this? why is it heeeere? nooo one knoooows, but the player sure does!" thats it, like, for funsies. its actually kind of insulting

I also did that. Funny story - I didn't even use the cat ring to get down there.  I just got enough HP to survive the fall.  Totally not a sequence break. Although it is not necessarily the "intended" order, the game doesn't really try to prevent you from going there.  The Shrine of Winter skip in 1.00 that was later patched out, now that was a sequence break.

I think they're all great as stand-alone parts.  The skill will translate about 90% no matter which one you start with.  Demons' Souls is pretty different than the other two in regards to a few systems, but you could reasonably pick up even that one as your first, if you wanted to.

So, been playing tons of PvP over the past two days, and I hafta say, I reaaally hate the counter rings.

Also, invading in Shaded Woods is the most wonderfully evil thing possible.

So has anyone experimented with bonfire ascetic yet? I used some on the Majula bonfire, just to try it out.

Besides making the enemies more difficult, it respawned all non-respawning enemies. Not only that, but there were alternate spawns, like there being two skeletons in the mansion basement instead of one. It also caused almost all of the items to reset. The only thing that didn't come back was the estus shard.

If you spend 2 ascetics, the armor merchant will start selling butterfly armor, and the upper chest has a butterfly shield.  At the 3rd he sells the butterfly hat.  Allows you to jump easily, but roll more difficultly, softens falls better than the cat ring, and slowly poisons nearby enemies and NPCs.

Burning an ascetic raises the local area to NG+ and gives +1 per ascetic burned, and stacks with finishing the game.  It resets all enemy spawns, item drops, and raises the difficulty.  It also resets bosses, in case you want two Pursuer souls...

How To: Baleful Queen as a Tank

If you've got a Tower Shield, you're already doing good.  First, go back to the middle bonfire, light a torch, and go outside to where the large windmill is.  If you burn it using the torch, it drains the poison out from the boss's middle area, though there's still some on the edges.

With that done, there should be a summon for a jester in the corner before the stairs - if the poison is still there, you probably can't see it, but with the poison drained the sign is VERY visible.  He's a jester who dual-wields pyromancy flames.

Go into the fight, and tank.  Smart stamina control, you'll be fine, while the jester fucker throws Fire from the Gods in her face.  Fight shouldn't take 2 minutes as long as you keep aggro and he keeps throwing fire.  Watch out for her grab attack, it ignores shield and one-shot me.
