12 minutes of Dark Souls 2 gameplay, right here: http://www.ign.com/videos/2013/04/10/dark-souls-2-gameplay-reveal-12-minute-demo

Thoughts:
-The overall format is seemingly identical to Dark Souls. Same UI, many of the same animations, Bonfires, heavy use of darkness and shadow...
-Same aesthetics. Grimy, discolored walls and filthy-looking crypts.
-Same dickery. One of the first nasties demo'd has an attack they only do when they're struck from behind.
-Same zany variety of enemies. Like the Chariot.

What looks different:
-Better cutaways. So for example, when you fall to your death, you're not just doing an animationless fall into nothing, you're actually rolling over and pitching around flailing.
-More lightly scripted events. So in the video he shoots an arrow at a beasty that's locked in a prison cell, and it smashes through the wall to get to the player.
-More hazards. In the "Mansion of the Dragon" what seemingly looks like a boss fight is actually a gigantic trap.
-UI looks like it has slightly more functionality. Perhaps it's just showing you what's in other slots if you were to switch weapons, or perhaps they're like sub-slots. Who knows.
-More death scenes. While it didn't show much in the video, apparently there are going to be more ways to die, and die with variety.
-A few new tweaks. Like being able to light a torch from an existing one to light dark areas of the game. (Instead of requiring a special item like the previous game.) Or the "Key Mouth" that lets you put stuff inside that creates different effects in the level. They said they want this to be a tactical choice for the player, where they decide what part of the game they want to spend their resources on to make things easier or "different."

I guess this means I need to go on a Dark Souls Jihad so I can beat the game finally.

Thanks for posting that, seems like it'll be pretty good. I played Dark Souls (haven't beat it quite yet) but not Demon Souls, and I heard rumors that this one wouldn't be as 'challenging' as the first two games... I hope they're wrong and DS2 is just as good if not better than DS was.

60 frames per second would help. I'm just saying.

Actions have consequences that may be 'lulworthy' while spectating a first time player to the game.  +1

Those "rumors" are completely false, this is the first actual gameplay footage. It's all based on the fact that the development team has changed a bit and there was something about them making the first part of the game "more accessible" to new players, which doesn't necessarily mean it'll be easier.

It certainly still looks awesome, definitely getting this on release date. Dark Souls is my favorite RPG of the generation.

I'm praying to the dark gods that, if nothing else, their control mapping on the PC isn't a trainwreck this time. Dark Souls is eminently playable with a USB controller but several people I've gifted the game to, who lack controllers, found it almost unplayable. Being that they know the PC market wants the game this time around and it's getting developed with us in mind....there's probably nothing to worry about. Still, I wonder if I'd be better at Dark Souls if I was playing it with ideally mapped mouse/keyboard controls.

I hope the difficulty is more environmental and less boss-fighty than Dark Souls 1.  I also hope they have less stupidly long boring walks from the save points to the boss fights.  A 20 second boss fight followed by a 2 min walk to do it again is not fun in my books.

Agreed. I'd gladly fight tough-ass bosses all day if I didn't have to work my way back through trash every time. That said, there being any sort of penalty for fucking up, even if it's a time penalty, is a motivator to do better. Maybe not the best motivator, but better than zerging a boss fight 10 times in 5 minutes until you figure it out. The victories are more meaningful when you have to work through them.

Nice summary.

I liked the gameplay video, especially the part with the torch. The fact that you don't have to set it up in your inventory to use it is great, and it add so much atmosphere. Did they confirm if they will release on PC?

I'm pretty sure it's going to be on PC, and it looks like it might not even use GFWL this time... we'll see.

As for the torch, it would be really nice if it remained lit when you dropped it (unless in water) so you can still see stuff around you if you unequip it.

"might even use GFWL this time" or "might not even"? That seems like a bit of a slip.

That is good to see, as I was probably going to buy it on the PC this time.  :D

With such a strong following it would be asinine for them to not release on PC. Besides, I'm sure they are also developing this for the PS4 and that platform pretty much has PC infrastructure, porting would be even less challenging than usual.
