If there is one thing I hate and hate more then everything else it is motivation speak (I forgot the term for it)

It is the biggest bunch of stupid, insipid, and outright insulting language ever collected.

Mind you I have no idea if that is what you linked, but "Motivational" and "Making + Start + Dreams" seems like it is going to use Motivation speak.

I dont know exactly what you mean by "motivation speak", but I guess it is what I linked to. Point is, the guy who wrote it is a friend of mine, and he is living what he speaks about. He travels a lot, has been to over 100 countries and lives in Thailand atm. Works 1 days a week, makes 5000 bucks a month. I know him, because I do exactly the same, I have been travelling (which is my greatest hobby) for 6 years now, have been to over 100 countries myself, and say the very same thing that he does: If you want something, just do it. I stepped out of my door when I was 19 with no idea what I was doing, and I did it anyway. And it all worked out.

What keeps me motivated personally is personal. However I would say that if you want motivation that you've got to look at yourself and what you want instead of others and what they want. Then when you look at yourself and what you want, go for it. It's really that simple. If you want to be motivated, be motivated. Just do it.

I keep myself motivated by thinking of what other people would think about my stuff. Not exactly motivational, oddly enough selfish in my opinion, but I always think about other people when I do stuff.

There's a lot of people that are not in control of their own motivation (including me) and that really disturbs me.
Oh well back to watching Fight Club for the fifth time.

Basically a big bunch of sayings that you tend to see in motivational speaches.

Now this is a motivational speech.  Fair warning, the language is pretty strong.

It is a motivational speech? It seems more like a beat down.

I do not know why I keep going, all I know is that I must. Having kind of a break down at the moment from working my ass off yet getting nothing done, and consequently falling more and more behind. The only thing I can do is keep working. I don't know if it works for you, but try thinking that you Simply Must.

Now this is a motivational speech.  Fair warning, the language is pretty strong.

It is a motivational speech? It seems more like a beat down.

It is.  Some people can't take a hint unless it's applied with a sledgehammer.  He's giving them a wake-up call, and shattering their illusions.  These things are usually neither gentle nor pleasant.

The message is clear if the listener doesn't get defensive, and it's important: You must produce.  There's no A for effort outside of grade school, if even there.  And there's no consolation prize for being a nice guy.  Results are what count.

If your children are hungry, all the hugs in the world won't help, you have to put food on the table.  When the rent comes due, the landlord doesn't care how kind or how honest you are, and they don't care how tough the job market is right now. They care whether you can pay what you owe them; if you can't, you're out on the street to make room for someone who can.  When your boss looks at the bottom line, you need to be earning him money, not costing him.

Don't make excuses for yourself, they don't matter and most people won't care.  Worse than being useless, they blind you to the truth that your success or failure is up to you, and no one else.  Take what you have and make something out of it.  If you don't, you have no one to blame but yourself.

Why get out of bed in the morning?  Why stick with your work or your education, and rack your brain trying to figure out ways to get more out of both?  Because if you don't, sooner or later you'll run out of second chances.  The consequences will be harsh, and they'll be your fault.

So take responsibility.  Own your successes and your failures.  Do your absolute best to succeed in your field, and if that's not good enough, either get better or find something else that you can do.

@weenog: It seems you are very focused on career and earning money. I dont think this thread was about all that. On a personal note, I dont think people that put all their effort into their jobs are very happy. Thats just... wrong.

"How do you know when you are truly wealthy? When you have complete control over how you spend your day.... So few people understand that basic truth. No matter how much money you make, unless your days are spent doing the things the really make you happy - the things that you enjoy so much that you would pay to do them - and you have control over your time, you aren't wealthy." -- Joshua Kennon

I'm focused on things like going to the Philippines and learning about the language, culture, and martial arts of a part of my heritage that interests me.  Going to church a little more often.  Building a home suitable to raise a family and eventually die in.  Fine-tuning a compost heap so it can recycle all my organic trash, not just the yard waste.  Working with circuit boards and wiring because I really like doing that, they've fascinated me since I was a child and it's been a hobby for years.  Stopping to investigate and explore whenever I encounter something new which piques my interest.

I also understand the harsh reality that the world doesn't owe me, you, or anyone else a living.  It's a lesson I learned the hard way, and it nearly cost me my life.  To grow my resources, whether they're money, apples, knowledge, or time, I have to take charge of my situation, and perform effectively, to the best of my ability.  Burying my head in the sand and citing self esteem as the reason I don't have to listen to or think about this truth isn't going to change it.  I wish someone had had the nerve and the tough love to take me aside and explain this to me in a blunt, no-bullshit way back when I just entering my teen years.  I'd have nearly a 20-year head start compared to now.

I don't work for my boss, and I don't study for a professor or a grade.  I work and I study for me.  The goal is to use my work income as seed money to invest, get myself into a position where I make a few thousand dollars a month (adjusted for inflation) as passive income from interest and dividends, and then never worry about money again.  Never let money or the lack of it get in the way of doing the things I really care about.  But if I don't produce results at my job and in my studies now, I'll blow my chances, and then I won't get to work or study at all.  "Make hay while the sun shines."  Do what you need to when you can, so you don't find yourself in a situation where you no longer can, and it's still undone.

I don't want to be homeless and broke again.  I don't want to hit 50 years old having done nothing that's really important to me, and still lack the resources to do them.  I don't want to start a family, and then fail as a provider.

I want to wake up every day with joy and enthusiasm about the things I can do, not despair about the things I have to do.  I can have that, I think we all can.  But to get there from here doesn't happen on its own, we have to apply ourselves and make it happen, even when it's hard, or when we can't muster up much enthusiasm for the tasks in front of us.  And we must remember that when we apply ourselves, the results are what matter, to the people around us, to our projects, and ultimately to ourselves.

Sounds cute, is totally legit. I'm pretty demotivated a fair amount of the time, and I gotta say one of the few things that keeps me going is the thought that someday I may live a wonderful life with someone I love, when I fall in love my grades shoot up as well.

When things get very bad and I can't do anything, I ask myself: "Would the emperor of the world slack off like this?" and in some feeble attempt to live up to that hidden challenge I get my shit together, at least for a little while!

Every time I lose motivation I think of all the people that are worse off than me, and that makes me feel better about myself, and more motivated to do things.

Most people probably aren't evil fucks like me, though.

When I travel by car, I tend to pass by lots of rular areas where people with simplistic world-views and no strong financial-or-whatever background live. That also gives me motivation to work more on stuff, since I don't want to end up like them.
