New screen name required, advice wanted
« on: April 01, 2013, 08:28:58 am »

So I'm bored to tears of having Kolnukbyne as my screen name, it's lame and boring. I feel like I need something new; I've been using this one for about 6 years and didn't even really like it when I first started using it.

But I really have no idea where to begin making a new one for myself.

So the question is: what do you people do when you make a screen name? What makes you choose the name you do?

for what it's worth i think your name is pretty rad

I basically just found a word that i thought sounded funny, so i employed it as a screen name. Same goes for pretty much every other alias i'm using, it HAS to sound funny to me. If it doesn't sound funny, i feel like a poser, which, although potentially true, is not what i envision myself as. I like to think of myself as more of an insane goofball (with brief lapses of somber sanity).

So i guess what i'm trying to say is, try to think of a name, word or whatever that goes well with what you think yourself to be. Screw what others think, you're the one using the name. IT'S TOTALLY DEEP LIKE THAT. I mean, it worked for me. Another name i relatively frequently use, "Vinkelbryn" (Danish for Anglebrow), actually stemmed from a character i made in All Points Bulletin, who had these REALLY sharp and angular eyebrows. Thus, i called him Vinkelbryn (again, Anglebrow), because danish sounds way more silly than english. That name was funny enough to stick around for other things.

And what i'm trying to say with what i was trying to say is, sometimes you just inadvertently stumble upon an awesome name. If that has yet to happen, slap a multitude of silly words together, maybe change a few letters.

Position of power + three greatest letters in the Alphabet = 90% of my internet usernames. A simple yet beautiful formula, I find.

Ye olde Microsoft Zone gaming servers suggested this as a random option. Laziness means I have kept it now for almost 15 years. I nearly passed it up for the alternates of either HalfBreed or BacterialMoth.

I thought having my username as my name with a few numbers sprinkled after it was boring, so I sat there trying to think of a new one. Chose a nice sounding pasta and smacked my favourite number on the end. Not that helpful, but that's how it was. :P

Favourites: ScorchAmoebae, LiquidSteel or SolidWater, WanderingBola, The Last Hocus (but those are all action hero names like mine, dunno if you'd like those)

About four years ago, when my brothers and I had a phase of playing online poker I realised I was in rather serious need of a username other than Gerbil707.  I don't really like having numbers in a username and I wanted to make it as unique as possible, and at that time I had a fascination with wasps, so what did our noble name-seeker do?  Why, look up the latin name for the Common Wasp!  This meant I have a choice of using Vulagarias AND Vespulan (I edited them to make myself feel even more special) so my suggestion is either use Latin or find some ancient Greek/Norse beast that sounds awesome like the Nidhogg or something :P

(And to anyone looking at this from the other post, yes I did just copy-and-paste.)

Well, I first chose this username back when I was 12 on Runescape, as I'm a Star Wars fan. To my eternal shame as a Grammar Nazi, I misspelt it. In case you're wondering it should be three y's. I have since got a bit bored with it, so on more recent accounts I use Kyyshak. Original, I know.

Have you got any sewing hanging on your walls?

Very important question.

Aw shucks, thanks!

Screw what others think, you're the one using the name.

Yeah! That's right! You tell them!

This is what I normally do when writing or thinking up a name for a character/place/whatever. I've never really thought to use it for a screen name before. Normally I use Latin, Welsh of Gaelic though.

I... er... no. No I don't.

I'm going to have to agree with Shook here, there's really nothing wrong with your username. For one, it's not a random jumble of letters and numbers that has no meaning like mine is :P
