I'd just reboot the whole system and try FireFox again then, since the lack of the supported feature in Chrome isn't because of any virus. Retrying pages that won't load isn't supported in Chrome: There are timed Refresh plug-ins for Chrome (which isn't what i want anyway), but they apparently stop working completely if the link ever goes dead, the exact opposite of what I need.

Buy a new computer. Your internet speed is surely to improve from the purchase of a new machine. Make sure you buy an overpriced macbook.

Try to reset firefox. That could solve some problems.

Make sure you do a headstand when you're buying it.

Thanks for that info, it seems to have made some difference, switching to a tab with a huge page just paused FF for 1 second, whereas i'm sure it was freezing before while doing that.

Give me links to the Firefox extensions you need, and I will see what I can do.

EDIT: I think I found your extension. Please hold.

That's the one i use. I was more lamenting that the same isn't available for Chrome. It's the reason i switched Chrome -> FireFox in the first place.

I downloaded the extension, and I discovered that and xpi file is just a zip file. Cracked it open and found Javascript inside. This means that, if I can strip out the parts that are Firefox-specific, you can use the extension in any browser that supports user scripts. I’ll keep you informed of my progress.

For slow Internet connection I recommend Opera. One of the features, to lazily quote wikipedia is:
Quote
Opera Turbo is a feature intended for slower Internet connections; when enabled, Opera's servers act as a proxy which compresses the requested web page by up to 80% before sending it to the user. This process reduces the total size of the data being sent, and thus shortens the amount of time necessary for the page to load.

If you don't mind your browsing happening through Opera servers of course.

If I understand Reelya, the re-connecting plugin is a non-negotiable necessity. 80% compression is good, but it is of little utility if the page doesn’t load at all. If I can make the plugin portable, Opera will be a possibility.

Losing signal is one thing, and I know about that.  I wasn't talking about loading pages, i thought i made that clear at least a couple of times in this thread already ... I was talking about FireFox basically crashing (completely unresponsive for interminable amounts of time) when i tried to switch tabs to look at already-loaded pages, to the point I'd just terminate the process and try again.

BTW putting one particular add-on back in (ant video downloader) seemed to make it unresponsive again! So it might have been that add-on (refreshing FireFox got rid of all add-ons). Didn't really need that particular one that much, so it's gone (i don't really have that many add-ons, despite everyone probably now thinks i'm add-on obsessed ;D, i have 4 plug-ins including Ad Block).
