On the non-metal armours...
« on: March 19, 2013, 11:00:24 am »

Brief question: What's the effectiveness of wood and bone armours? Considering that we currently don't get "Urist McWoodarmour was disgraced at wearing such elfy -Maple greaves-" and "Urist McBonearmour felt extremely badass in his *Grizzly bear bone helm*" messages, it might be useful to just give everyone a set of wood or bone armour so that they don't get mauled to death by badgers. And it'd be cool to have an adventurer called "Dohvakiin" Dragonslayer (feel free to switch first name for appropriate dragonslayer) wearing masterwork dragonbone armour.

Non metal armors are crap.  They're better than clothing but that's all that can be said for them.

It's useful to keep a ‼torch‼ handy.

Better than cloth, much worse than metal. Wood < Bone < Metal

it stops slashes with silver and copper weapons sometimes. stabs go through consistently.

The question seems to have been about natural attacks from wildlife, though. I also remember seeing somewhere that leather armor was useful against some blunt attacks. I wonder if it helps with falling, also...

everything helps against falling, to some extent. As for natural attacks, hoof kicks and bites+shakes seem to be the most dangerous ones. Bone armor does not protect well against either of them, afaik

Sounds like a good time for arena testing. Set some wood, leather, and bone armored dwarfs up against various natural killers like yaks, groups of badgers, kea people, zombie crows...

Do civvies wear armors on their own? Or you do have to draft them into a squad, assign a uniform, and leave inactive? Cos that would bring bad thoughts.

I've only managed to make this happen through a quick draft->discharge method.  Unfortunately, it also leaves any dwarfs without at least Novice in a military skill with a bad thought.  Use with care.

then why not just make leather clothes that civvies will wear automatically? it could be a full set so everything gets covered up.

Through testing in adventure mode, I found only leather caps count as both clothing and armour.

That's generally what i try to do, with limited success. Dwarves are still stupid enough to occasionally run around naked refusing your new and superior clothes once their old set breaks down.

It's not that hard to get a thriving clothing industry with a pig tails farm plot and some legebdary farmers. Every season I am able to produce clothing for the next two years.

Civilians in inactive squads will wear armor and only get the initial bad thoght of the draft. They also sometimes go to a barrack and train their combat skills. A huge number of dabbling marksdwarves can break a siege.

It only brings bad thoughts if activating or deactivating them causes them to become Recruits or Peasants. If you're not in a hurry you can put them in a squad and give them a uniform without ever activating them. They'll go and pick up their armour sooner or later.

You could also try creating a burrow encompassing only the armour storage and then setting a civilian alert for that burrow. With nothing else to do there, the only job they can take is Pickup Equipment.

I am trying to make chickens lay bees as eggs. So far it only produces a single "Tame Small Creature" when a hen lays bees.
Honestly at the time, I didn't see what could go wrong with crowding 80 military Dwarves into a small room with a necromancer for the purpose of making bacon.
