Are the magic rules the same for divine spellcasters and does this mean that if I am a spellcaster that the spells that I can choose on level up are locked until I find someone to teach me them?

Yes, depending on the spell's school and what it does, you may just learn it from a local priest, or you may have to travel aaaaall the way back to europe and learn it from a cardinal, so yeah.

Will there be apostates for divine spellcasters as well so you don't have to learn them from the church itself

I'm going to say this now then because I was debating an Oracle/Witch for giggles. But reconsider checking the spell rules from Divine, and Arcane sources, as well as how a class acquires these. Witches are usually solitary, and gain their power through a pact with an unknown, otherworldly power and commune with it to gain new abilities through her familiar. Similar to Oracles, they gain abilities through speaking with their patron deities. Do these classes have an advantage over others because they can camp down for the evening and speak to these higher powers? If not, where would someone find a witch to chat it on up with during the 17th century and the height of the 'Shes a witch, burn her ass' era?

We're not exactly playing a computer game, are we? Rules are quite flexible, and this will be a highly descriptive game.
The gist is that you are not really going to get free spells everytime you level up because you leveled up. If they are in special circumstances, like 2 months into the wilderness, and the trip back home itself would grant ANOTHER level due to encounters or something, I may just let them have the spells they want to. Meaning that they will be more or less used as plot devices, and reason for players to travel around the world, getting involved in this and that. Some GMs make players pay gold to learn new spells, in those games, are witches and oracles overpowered? I don't think so.

Okay, here's the thing. I will probably let you learn new spells without any complications up till level 10 or something, that's what I've had in my mind, I wasn't going to bring it out, but, well, there it is.

Then you've ignored the question. For other spellcasters, gaining new spells is through travelling halfway across the world for what I presume, is to find some kind of teacher. Using the witch as an example because it's more prominent:

'Generally feared and misunderstood, the witch draws her magic from a pact made with an otherworldly power. Communing with that source, using her familiar as a conduit, the witch gains not only a host of spells, but a number of strange abilities known as hexes.'

Are witches forced to travel to the original location of the pact? Do they have to find some random witch out in a swamp? Do they get their abilities through further communication with this power? Do witches work differently for the campaign? If I make a class and the DM wants backstory, then these are the kind of things that I'd like more on first before making a decision on a class.

EDIT: Was ninjaed by another edit. But these questions are still viable.

...Why oh why do you make this 10 times harder than it's supposed to be?
What I said was basically, 'I'm the GM. You do what I say.', and I say that witches can just pull spells out of their asses because they are witches.
Done.

I don't know man, it seems kind of important to know how you'll actually be getting your spells as a certain class. If it's a pain in the ass to get spells as a certain class, then someone might not want to play it. You can't just say "Do what I say" when someone asks for the specifics regarding an arguably important part of their class.

Fine. I will disclose it sometime tomorrow, since I have another session very soon.
But I have to beg you guys not to play this like an MMO, it.. kinda sorta kills the plot.

I don't see how Bikari asking this question seems to make you think we have the intentions of treating this like an MMO. He's simply asking a question that will potentially impact his character backstory, and whether or not playing as a Witch would be appealing to him.

I mean, if you didn't really think of it before it's fine to admit that. No one really cares, just decide which way they'll gain spells and we can move on.

The settings is not complete. Lorgath and I are working on it everyday, so if I were you, I would hold on creating your backstory for now, and like I stated on the OP, your backstories are subject to change if you submit them now. So be warned.

Just wondering are we going to be allowed traits for our characters and if we are how many?

I'd like to give this a shot if you'll have a new to pathfinder player. Without further information on the plot, I'd like to ask that dark fantasy accurate to the times over steam punk is the emphasis. On that note, can you do more world-building, if only through pm? For fun and roleplaying opportunities, realistically handled, I wish to be neither European, American nor white with all the reasons you might expect to have an interest in a forgotten continent. (Being taken as a slave is a reasonable explanation, but i do wish it to be explained.)

What's our starting level's, by the way? Could we come into the game unskilled? Must we be a unequivocal member of the party, or can it be each to it's own? I presume there will be very good reasons for teaming up if we must do so.

Well, there's magic. That immediately suggests that a continent in ascendancy has a firm enough grasp to be given an edge over the others, in which case I'd like the policy of heretic purging to be well fleshed out and reasoned. Secondly, it's a new continent. Resources are well and good, but the appeal is exploiting it's magic, flora, fauna practitioners and otherwise. Frankly i'd be disappointed if the foreign territories in their empires didn't see it as an opportunity.
