Also: how's our sense of smell?

It is a dead body. 

You smell death.  You also smell that the body is not suitable for drinking.  Then you smell
pollution.  It is overwhelming. 

You remorse on the death of the two cops that did not happen.  You spared them, as instructed, although they probably are out for numerous broken limbs.

But is it a human body? Inspect the body.

Is the 'not suitable for drinking' more of a 'not quite human' kind of smell or a 'dead for 3 days' kind of smell?

The blood is coagalated, so no you can't drink it.  His teeth normal except for the canines.  They are long and sharp.  It stands up.  "Can't you see I'm in the middle of my nap? Go find your own resting place.  Stupid vampires."

"What! Why do you think I would do that, vampire?" He exclaims it forcefully.

"Please excuse me. I'm new to the whole vampire thing. That building is my old tenement and I'm a bit lost as to where I should start. Again my sincerest apologies, I saw your fangs and assumed you were a vampire."

"Oh, well that explains it.  Ghouls are like vampires, except several simple distinctions.  We eat meat, preferably rotten.  We always smell and feel rotten.  Sunlight is no problem though.  Immortality is the same.  We're a heck of a lot stronger though, and a heck of a lot slower.  Just punch me and you'll see."
