Google Announces Closure of Reader
« on: March 14, 2013, 05:57:25 am »

This just ruined my day.

I've been using Google Reader as my RSS feeder for years. I've cultivated a select list of blogs and website subscriptions that I find interesting over this time and visit Reader daily to catch up on the latest updates. If I have time to kill, I'll often skim through the Explore section of Reader for interesting articles related to my personal preferences and often find gems among the noise.

Anyone else here an RSS feed user? So far I've been exploring Feedly and The Old Reader as alternatives.Neither seems to match up to what I'm used to though.

From what I've seen, the fifty people who still use RSS are appalled while everyone else's response is more along the lines of "What's an RSS?"

Tremendously useful, that's what! Though I guess there's a more mainstream feed aggregator whatsit or something? I'unno. 'Till it stops working I don't really intend to find something else.

But yeah, I just use Opera's built in RSS feed thingy. I thought google reader was its book thing, not some sort of RSS feed. Didn't even know google reader existed.

I bet immediately after google reader is closed, and I mean immediately, the zombie apocalypse will occur and everyone will blame google for it.

Well, it's probably kinda gonna suck when you next change your computer.

But if I know Google right, they'll just launch something better right afterwards. Probably tied to G+ though.

Export feed list -> Email -> Import feed list :P

Do probably need to start doing that occasionally, though.

This is really fucking annoying.

I switched to G-Reader after Sage died the second time and I got a smartphone. Made more sense to have my feeds in the cloud than try to come up with a syncing solution and multiple programs/addons/apps. I also use the hell out of the built in search feature. Given a vast amount of my daily reading for the last five years is included it serves as an effective external memory. Even if there is an alternative site that serves exactly the same purpose (Feedly looks promising, but I'm holding off till I have to switch)

I've found that RSS is absolutely vital if you follow any serious amount of webcomics, blogs or, say, video game developers that infrequently update but you are intensely interested in. I've got sites followed that have shut down for months or years at a time only for me to find out within minutes of them making a new post.

What is an RSS feeder? I've honestly never heard of it, and strangely enough Googling it hasn't been very helpful.

RSS in general.

Short form is it's a program or whatever that tells you when websites update. More or less.
