« on: March 13, 2013, 03:24:12 pm »

Hey guys so Castle doctrine alpha recently came out today

http://thecastledoctrine.net/about.php

basically you need to build a house with ingenious traps and defend your money and wife and children. While also going out and robbing other peoples houses so that you can gain more money, yes it is a MMO format but with no subscription.

Its currently $8 and damn its addictive, i currently sit at the top of the leader board with my jigsaw trap game so come at me people !

Basic introduction into the game via youtube! by one of our very own members with his voice like silk watch it! : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=beyfZbemho0

I will also be giving away 3x copys of this to the community !

One-time fee MMOs are always a nice thing to see. And so is building!

Went through the video linked, this thing actually looks like a bunch of fun. Unique sort of take on the oft used Tower Defense genre.

So far, I'm having stupid amounts of fun with this. It seems there are certain strategies that are more effective than others, and early on it seems better to just focus on simple trap designs rather than trying for anything complicated.

But thanks for bringing this to my attention, a very fun little time waster :D

I think there's another thread for the give away itself.

Regarding the game though, is there any way to rotate the inverter switch?

Also, some things I've worked out via experimentation:

Pit-bull will always try to get to you in a straight line, it doesn't try to path to you, it simply tries to match your x or y coordinates if it can. So for example if you move down, the pit-bull will try to move down too, even if that means putting a wall between you and it. So you can trick it into walking into a corner and thus being unable to reach you (and likewise you can use this pathing logic to create traps that'll be tricky to work out at first glance). If it reaches you, it'll kill you.

Chihuahua will path much like the pit-bull, but it wont kill you when it gets to you. There are no negative consequences to it following you around. They can make an intruder avoid certain doors though, thinking that there are pit-bulls behind them, or even be used to trigger trap logic using pressure plates!

Cat's act exactly the opposite to Chihuahuas. They will try to get away from the player if possible, so could be used in much the same ways to trigger pressure plates.

But yeah, if anyone knows of a way to rotate the inverter switch, I'd be very greatfull :)

Wait, let me get this straight?  You lose your fucking house and have to start over if you die?  is there any way to save your setups?

EDIT:  Seems like that's just part of the game.  I'm trying a WIFOM approach.  Big open room with a couple pitbulls in zero margin for error range, you run all the way down and there's three corridors that might have the safe.  The first one is the safe, the other two are dead ends.

Hey folks, Jason Rohrer here, the guy who made this game.

Someone emailed me and asked me to join the thread, so here I am.  I'm really busy preparing for GDC, but I'll try to pop back in here from time to time over the next few days.

To answer the one question that came up so far:  no, there is no way to rotate anything (so the inverter switch always has to have the trigger on the top).  I did this to keep things as simple as possible in terms of user interface.

Wow, hi Jason, thanks for answering my question so quickly! It's a shame it can't be rotated, but I can't argue with your reasoning at all. I imagine there would be a lot of potential deaths due to miss-reading the icon given how pixelated it is, and that would only lead to frustration.
