Before departing you have the men hide the cart and carriage in the underbrush as best as you can, but take the valuable gifts you had brought along and enough of the food to ensure that you are confident you will be fed if things go sour. You also tell them to beware of creatures that may erupt from the earth. Your warning frightens a few, but you are sure that they will be a little more prepared for such an attack if it is to come.

Much of your time is spent speaking with Ritalia on the culture and language of the Adalbert people, and your progress is remarkable. You already knew a few words and phrases, but very quickly you master the sentence structure. Both you and Ritalia are amazed at the speed with which you pick up the tongue, and you have no doubt you will soon learn how to speak conversationally.
Barick speaks often to the Adalbert soldiers, and you can follow along with the general meaning of a conversation. You learn that Barick lived here in Adalbert nearly two decades ago, before running off to join a mercenary company, he's fought both for and against Adalbert forces. You also pick up that the soldiers are very worried, and that it has been pressed upon them just how important this marriage is.
Your training on the road continues to make little headway, but you are beginning to enjoy the routine of daily sparring.

You make poor time, and as a result tensions run high. The escorting soldiers seem tense and suspicious of the local area, taking great care to investigate every sound they might hear while on watch, and generally over-scrutinizing the local wildlife. It occasionally slows down travel, but it seems they blame the poor progress on your sister, who occasionally needs to stop and rest. Her health is not flagging, but the continued travel has taken it's toll on her body all the same.

It takes a little over a week to properly enter the principality, and you are relieved to find properly paved and maintained roads. You pass by an abandoned village on the way in, and are told by a soldier that it has something to do with a war. You surreptitiously scry the place, pretending to comb your hair, and find that many of the buildings have caved in, but not from rot or fire. Barick seems to be saddened by the towns destruction.

In three days you arrive at your destination. The fortress of Koringberg, the namesake of this very principality, and home to the man Ritalia may one day marry. The fortress seems dark and foreboding, very fearsome, and is teeming with life. An abundance of soldiers patrol the walls, and a make-shift shanty-town surrounds the fortress on two sides, filled with a great number of the poor.

You are to soon meet the prince of Koringberg, one of the most powerful men in Adalbert. How will you approach this task?

Gauge him. Test him. If he says we are overstepping our bounds, we say that she is our sister and we can do as we wish in this.

Yes, I'd prefer to let him make a fool of himself than to do so ourselves. Remember, we are a 13 year old. What may seem clever to us may in fact be asinine and annoying coming from a teenaged boy.

That would only piss him off.  If there's one thing rude assholes respect, it's people who can give and take just as well.  Never flat out insult him though, always either accept and insult then compliment him with one (if I had hair like yours then I too wouldn't have to bathe)

Don't forget that your also a prince.

Of course knowing of your sisters arrival this guy could be a nervous wreck and trying super hard to impress her.  If he seems uncomfortable then be the first to break the ice.

As long as he'd never harm our sister then let them be.

You ride into the fortress a party of seven*, leaving the soldiers and mercenaries to make camp outside of the fortress walls.  The fortress is surrounded by a square wall with four great towers at each of it's corners. Within this wall are the residences and businesses of the common people, though there is a degree of poverty and squalor that you are unused to, coming from one of the wealthiest cities in this part of the world. You soon come to another wall, this one sitting atop a hill. It seems much older than the first, and in places is marred by stone long melted. This second wall surrounds the castle that is your destination, which you are soon ushered inside.
Inside the casle has little of the wealth you are used to, and the few decorations present seem to mostly be trophies of war and reminders of times long passed. You are met by a group of pages that attend to your needs, fetching you food and drink as requested and doing their best to make you feel comfortable. You are forced to wait about two hours in all, but do not suffer any hardship for it and are soon ushered into an audience chamber.

Sitting in a granite throne on the other end of the audience chamber is Prince Penrod, ruler of the principality of Koringberg. Penrod himself is lithe, a surprising detail given the local culture of warfare and insistence on the martial discipline of nobility. He leans forward in his throne, one eye scrutinizing and boring into you in particular, the other fused shut in an angry red scar. Beside him one throne is empty, and at his feet a sword lies sheathed. No one else is in the room, and Penrod speaks in slow and laborious Annalyssian, welcoming the party to his home. You and Ritalia both give a proper greeting in the local tongue, which brings a chuckle from the man.
"I do not know if you know about our custom." He speaks in a thick accent, "but i would like to get the sitting done soon, maybe it is not right of me to rush, but i think it better to not wait more than a few days, perhaps sooner even."

You are aware of the tradition, but had not thought to receive such a request mere moments after meeting the man. The tradition involves seating a girl before a suitor to be properly examined by him, he is to ask her questions and receive honest answers, they are to be completely alone except for the girls father or someone representing her father, once it is concluded the suitor either announces that the girl is the one he wishes to marry, or swear to never again pursue the girl in any fashion. To your understanding it's quite rude for a suitor to ask for such without so much as having a conversation with the girl, Ritalia seems as surprised as you are.

Telling someone there not acting within their culture is like telling a french person they pronounced a word wrong, and you should know, you teach french to some high school students in Austin, Texas.

When in Rome...

This lets us do what we want (judge his character) without a lot of conversation. And, being in the middle of his fortress with only a handful of mercs, we aren't in a position to really dictate events anyway.

I think its time to stop worrying about our sister. She'll be married to the guy whether we like it or not. What we should be interested in doing now is earning this guy's respect. So with that in mind, let's agree to the sitting tomorrow in game (so as to allow us to prepare our sister for the grilling), represent our father, and show him and this guy that we can get things done. If we somehow avert this marriage, father will blame us.

Consent to the sitting, but tomorrow.

We don't want our host thinking we're the doting brother here. We're in charge.  Undue delay could suggest to him that we aren't a serious player and that we're taking commands from a woman. To a barbarian, I'm sure, that's disgraceful. We'll take all the international respect we can get. Too late says we defer to our sister. Too early says we're a pushover.

You decide it best to act decisively and confidently. "Give us a day to prepare and we will meet you on the morrow. As i am blood, i will represent our father in defending the honor of the princess." Sir Evanson winces as you speak, and you can tell that he had planned on speaking on the matter himself.
The prince however, seems pleased at your swift response, "Good, tomorrow, i will look forward to seeing you then. I have not been a good host though, so before i let you leave, is there a thing you want from me?"

Ask him for a dinner prepared in the local styles, as well as some entertainment for the evening. See if we can gather anything about their culture from these two requests.
