Our number one reason to be here is defend our sister, we should just wait for them to come instead leaving the carts and our sister defenseless.

Perhaps we should send her out somewhere so she isn't in danger, not to far though, and with some guards of course. Then again can mercenary's be trusted alone in the woods with a princess...

Raynor Casar, Royal Prince of Analysse, popular claimant on the future crown.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

You mount your horse and tell your men to prepare for a fight. Berick and Verack join you at the head of the force, and the rough mercanaries look eager to do battle, weapons and teeth bared.

You spare one last moment to scry on the approaching forces and find them to be disorganized and spread out. The horsemen are armed with spears and swords, and two are in beaten and aged armor. If they prove an enemy you are confident that you will be able to at least drive them off until help arrives.
Verack sends his mage and archers out too flank them, and you begin to move your forces.

...

The force is just as disorganized as you arrive, with no discipline or cohesion. The men at the head seem stunned as you come into sight, and one calls for a halt.
You meet two of the horsemen at the halfway point, and one immediately presses a question to you. "Prince Raynor?"
You nod the affirmative, and the man dismounts for a proper bow. "It is good to see you unharmed, i am Sir Raymond. We met your squire on the road, being harried by these eastern scum, we made short work of them before resuming our travel here. I'm afraid the boy was wounded, but he will live."
You feel mixed emotions, you feel glad at the news, but your mind also flashes to the man you killed only last night. "Where is he? I thought him dead."
Raymond smiles, "I had him sent to my healer, he is safe."

You spend some time conversing with the knight. He has a very common and awkward air about him, and is clearly unused to dealing with those of higher station than himself. He had apparently sent a man to check on the village a few days ago, but grew concerned when the man did not return, and prepared for the worst. He is surprised when you tell him that you've already moved against the eastern camp, and expresses gratitude at you having already made steps to accomplish a task he would have found difficult. He shortly takes his leave and brings his forces to the hamlet to ensure the safety of the peasants there, he tells you the settlement may even have to be abandoned after this business.

Not sure what else to do, you return to camp and spend some time practicing swordplay with Barick, until Sir Evanson returns victorious. His forces are unscathed beyond a few bruises and cuts from the underbrush. Beyond all likelihood he managed to catch the enemy camp by surprise, and easily drove them off, mostly by virtue of the skilled crossbowmen, who seem particularly proud. All in all you've been very successful, and you feel a sort of pride in the grim work.

Sir Alanson asks if you would like to resume travel, or if there is anything else you would like to do first.

Ask if our squire can travel if not we can pick him up on the return trip. Also, ask Barick and Sir Evanson not to reveal to anyone about our scrying magic.

Even if he isn't able to travel, we should still see him, taking a break in a castle is better then taking a break in an inn, at least for a night.  Who knows we might meet some cool people.

Raynor Casar, Royal Prince of Analysse, popular claimant on the future crown.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Pulling Barick and Evanson aside you tell them that you need your magic to remain a secret for the time being, explaining that you need it to remain a sort of ace in your deck. Both understand, and promise to keep it a secret, though Evanson seems uncomfortable to make such an oath.

The camp packs up and begins to move out, and Raymond rides out to meet you on the road. He explains that his adopted son came with him, and that he's more than capable of overseeing affairs here at the hamlet. The local knight promises to give you a proper welcome at his home, and begins to lead the way.
You spend most of the trip on horseback speaking to Raymond, rather than in the carriage with Ritalia. The man seems much more a commoner than a noble, managing to both break etiquette and be overly reverential all at once. The land here has been in the mans family for many generations, and he has much more interest in the people here than in politics or war, it's a refreshingly genuine perspective, you are much more used to the court nobility working angles, and relish the opportunity to talk freely with another noble.

The trip takes nearly two days but manages to pass quickly enough, and you find yourself at Meadow-wick just as the light begins to fail. The town is small, but neatly organized, and in the center is Raymond's home, a spacious but empty feeling wooden manor. The men are given room and board among the villagers, and you are heartened to see Elwer meet you as you enter town. His injuries were apparently superficial, the arrow that you thought had buried itself in his back had apparently failed to break skin, and had merely stunned him. He will be able to ride out of town with you in the morning.

Raymond's household is rather small, and at dinner the guests easily outnumber the hosts. His wife is a young peasant girl who Raymond knew growing up in Meadow-wick, and the house healer is an elderly man who has been with the household for three generations. Raymond was an only child, and both of his parents died a few years ago from a wasting illness. The visit is pleasant, and while you occasionally find the common speech and custom to chafe you are sure you've made some new friends.

That night you suffer from poor dreams, but are no worse in the morning for it, and you find that your mood has improved. Raymond tells you he will be pleased to receive you on the return trip.

...

You continue along the planned route, encountering and staying in villages along the way, and staying away from  more conspicuous routes. Barick has you practice shield work with the shield he brought along, insisting that you should have a minimum of skill in it's use. Your skill progresses relatively quickly, but you still haven't mastered the basics of using a shield in conjunction with a weapon.

For several more weeks you travel, and the travel is beginning to show strain on you. You do not possess much in the way of constitution, but you manage to pace yourself well, and find yourself suffering only from some fatigue. You have been on the road for a month, progress has been a little slower than anticipated, but you at last reach neutral territory between Analysse and Adalbert. Adalbert soldiers were supposed to meet you here and help escort you the rest of the way, but they have not yet arrived, so a choice must be made.
You must either wait for the escort, or forge on alone into the border zone. The dirt road however, is poorly kept from this point on, so if you do continue you will have to decide whether or not to bring the carriage and carts, which could slow you down significantly if luck fails you.

Another note, which was to be my first but I forgot somehow.  How would it appear to the new prince, if we didn't wait for his escort?  Pretty rude I'd bet.

You decide it best to wait. The escort may be a little behind schedule, but then again so are you, sometimes things happen.
You can't really decide what to occupy your time with, so you indulge the insistence of Barick on training. He has you continue to practice your shield-work, sometimes throwing stones at you and sometimes merely hammering away at you with a stick to get you used to both blocking and absorbing the shock of impact. Unfortunately you fail to really progress, and earn your fair share of bruises, but at least it is good exercise. The men being bored as they are take up after your example and make a habit of sparring daily.
Despite all the training, the break from marching and riding sits well with everyone, and the party is much more refreshed; with the exception of Ritalia, who grows weak with the exertion of camping and travel. It is well a healer was brought, else you would be very worried for her. You are forced to dip a little more deeply into your preserved food than you would like, but that is what it is there for.

A week passes until the escort arrive, and you are shocked by their condition. The men are dressed in chain-mail, armed with battle axes and shields. All but three of them are atop horses, but a few of the men have equipment in deep disrepair. Some have torn chain shirts and others have rent shields, or no shields at all. Clothing and equipment is stained by blood and some kind of creamy yellow-white substance that happens to be a little revolting.

When you attempt to speak with them you learn that none speak your language, and you know only a smattering of their vocabulary. Barick surprises you again when he translates what they have to say. Apparently they had trouble with beasts upon the road, and lost their translator and a fair number of their men. They assure you that the way is safe now, and that they have dealt with the problem.

Unfortunatly they insist that you leave behind your carriage and carts, telling you that they will be far more trouble than they are worth on the road. They bring out a beautiful white horse for the princess to ride on the trip instead, calling it a gift.

Besides Barick Ritalia is the only one in the party who speaks the Adalbert tongue, this could be worrisome. Is there anyone you would like to confer with or anything you want to do before heading into foreign lands? Anything you would like to do while heading into those foreign lands?

Proceed.  While traveling, practice more sparring, and also ask Ritalia for lessons on this foreign language.

+1, especially the language. We should be able to at least introduce ourselves in this foreign tongue by the time we arrive, and ask basic questions like "How are you?"

If these beasts can take on such well armed opponents it can be worrisome, we should probably tell our group about it. Perhaps it is those tunneling things that that western man told us about.
