Weapons training it is but doesn't mean we shouldn't look into more about lore of magic. Also, that brooch is probably enchanted with some type of ward or communication spell.

Our dad is a warrior so weapons training supplemented by offensive magic training. Basically work towards becoming a battle-mage. That way we can show our father the benefits of having a magic using son.

What I meant about lore of magic, is finding about what different types of magic are there.

Hmm... Meditative=trance inducing, and William's magic "openned him to the world" Sounds like spirit-trance. I wonder if he was possesed by some historic mage. Anyway, I think the king's beef is with impractical magic, not magic in general.                                           Continue as before, but find something more secure than an open market stall buisness.  As for William,be supportive. Heir or not, he's still family, and we care about thatt sort of thing. Finally, keep our studies low-key.

Out of curiosity: what is the state of communication magic in the kingdom? Can you reliably contact other cities? Do generals still need to lead charges or are there communication artefacts available to the army? If so, at which level? (it's possible that equipping every man, or even every squad or company, is too expensive but instant communication is still available between brigades or armies)
Communication magic is common enough to allow fast communication between cities and military units, but is expensive because one must either have a magical device or mage in tow.

We shouldn't abandon magic, but we should definitely slow down a tad. While we're at it, work on our martial skill a little, to make ol' Dad dislike us less.

Agreed, we want to learn swordplay. Keep working heavily in magic, though. If you go for magic, you should try to get as much magic as you can manage.

Up until this point you've split your time between involving yourself in mercantile affairs, spending time at court, and learning magic. To engage in swordplay you would need to neglect at least one of these pursuits, though you need not entirely abandon it, what should be neglected?
I assume we are all in favor of a time skip then?

Reduce magic and time at court, but don't completely eliminate either. Or, eliminate magic.

In the former case, make sure people understand that we're neglecting our courtly time to focus on making ourself worthy.

I say whatever you do, just don't reduce magic.

Why not? It's cool and all, but the king doesn't like it and we haven't exactly made much progress on our own...

The King doesn't like MEDITATIVE magic. He didn't care about the magic, he thought William was a hippy, and It was specifically said that the king needed more war-wizards. That said, the  dagger may be a subtle prod towards training.

As I said, if you use magic, it's better to have more. We can be good at swordsmanship and magic.
