recall what, if anything, we know of Eric.

It's a funny thing, you've never really heard of him before now, but looking at him now he seems familiar, it's hard to put your finger on why.

"I would remind you that i am a prince due certain niceties, if you would be so kind i would appreciate it if you refer to me by the proper title, "Boy" is not the proper title." You keep your tone level and respectful, but you keep your body language strong, if not aggressive.
Eric stands up straight at this, wincing. "Fair enough.You have my apologies, it's been a very long night and i am in need of some sleep."
You perk an eyebrow, "night?"
"Heh, yeah, with all this business going on i was never quite able to get sleep. I've been left with Prince william for the time being, and no one has gotten around to letting me get some rest. I would ask you to help me out with that, but i'm not really sure what the high-ups have planned for all this, they're keeping it all hushed." Eric begins to relax as he talks, letting his guard down.
You consider trying to get him to tell you what he knows, but you arn't sure if that would be wise or not, so you continue on the task you had planned. "I don't suppose you've seen my mother anywhere? I heard she was around."
Eric gestures towards the door. "Yeah, actually she's inside right now talking to William. I could fetch her in a minute, shouldn't let her stay in there too long. "

I would like to take this break to just say... you rolled far better on that then i would have expected. This... actually changes the flow of things quite a bit. XD

After a few minutes of waiting, Eric knocks on the door and enters. Soon your mother comes out, escorted by the squire. "I believe your son would like a word with you." She glares at Eric at this, and the scowl you saw him wearing earlier returns. "I guess i will leave you two alone my queen." He closes the door, shutting himself in with your brother and whoever else might be inside.
Your mother turns to you and sighs. More than anything she seems... worn. Like in a few short hours she's aged a decade. "You've caused almost as much a stir as your brother you know, it's going to be chaos the next few months." Your mother raises a hand to her head, like she has a headache. "What was it you wanted to speak to me about?"

"There are a few things i wanted to ask, but firstly I am concerned for my brother, and you don't seem to be doing too well either. Can i ask how each of you are doing?"
Your mother again sighs. "Your brother is not well, he sees his life as over and is panicking perhaps overmuch. It's likely he'll lose any support or alliances he's made over this, so i suppose it's understandable why he is reacting so poorly." the queen frowns and looks you over. "Were you not my son your actions today would give me reason to doubt your sincerity, but i'm sure part of why you are here is to ask me for advice. As your mother i must tell you to tread carefully, many will try to manipulate you and curry favor with you for the day you become king, or in the least secure real power for yourself."
You listen carefully, and when she is finished speaking you thank her for her concern and advice, and move the topic to other matters. "This business with William, i know nothing of it, only that it is serious and probably involves some kind of sorc-"
"Shhht!" Your mother puts her hand in front of your mouth, as if to prevent anything more from passing through, and quickly darts her head back and forth to see if anyone was nearby to overhear. "Come with me, quickly."
Not arguing, you allow her to take you nearby to her study, a place you have never been inside. It's not nearly as grandiose as the royal library but it seems to house a number of rare tomes, you even see one that you've been looking for for some time. Your scholarly appreciation is interrupted by your mothers relieved sigh. "There, i've had this room doubly warded to prevent eavesdropping, only an experienced scry-master could see into this room, and if they did i would know about it." She sits down at the table, and gestures to you to do the same. "There are some things you should know, things your father once tried to keep from you, but has since given up on. See, your father is a warrior, one of the best in the land, he's always wanted warrior sons to follow in his proud legacy. Your brother though, has always had little appreciation for the martial arts, like you he prefers books and scrolls, i suppose i had my own hand in that. Your brother began to pursue meditative magic, peaceful spell-craft that is muchly about opening ones mind to the surrounding world, your father did not take after this idea, called the pursuit frivolous and attempted to have him give it up. William... rebelled, and began researching all manner of things that perhaps he should not have, last night that... culminated. I should not say much more, but i will tell you William attempted something very foolish, and very bad, and it resulted in the death of some of the palace guards who came to his rescue. Details will emerge over time, perhaps you will even piece it all together, but i urge you not to look into the matter too deeply, this knowledge can be... dangerous, and must be guarded closely. " The queen unhooks a brooch from her dress and hands it to you, clasping your hands in hers as she does so. "I know i have not been an attentive mother, i hope that might change. Know that i love you and will do my best to see you through the years to come, please keep this brooch close, as a token of my love."
You thank your mother, and the two of you speak on much less serious matters for the hours to come, she actively asks questions about your life and makes small observations of things you hadn't thought of before, at the last she reminds you to be careful, and hints that William may not be totally at fault for what occurred, telling you that you shouldn't hold it against him overmuch. You come away from the encounter feeling much better and at ease than when you entered it, and you like to think that your mother enjoyed the diversion too.
You spend the remainder of your day in thought in your quarters, and briefly look over todays gifts. The dagger from your father is of fine quality, the highest quality steel and with a fine point that you imagine is for slipping through weaknesses in armor. The brooch from your mother is high quality, but fairly unremarkable, simple gold with a simple lined design etched into it, and a shining emerald embedded in it's center. Your servants tell you that your bodyguard will arrive tomorrow afternoon, he had to be sent for. You eventually drift off to sleep, wondering what you should do on the morrow.

I'm going to try and call an end to this roleplaying section soon so that the young prince can get some years on him, unless you guys force something significant to happen tomorrow (ingame) will probably be the last roleplay day.
I also did something kind of dumb, and now the King and the squire you met recently both have exactly the same name. If it's alright with you folks i'm going to retroactively alter the kings name to Loren, i'll go back and hunt down all mentions of his name (they are few) on the morrow, and alter them appropriately.

I don't know why, but I get this weird feeling that the brooch is a magical tracking device.  Oh well.

Focus on other matters.  Try to learn more magic, but be more subtle about it.

Out of curiosity: what is the state of communication magic in the kingdom? Can you reliably contact other cities? Do generals still need to lead charges or are there communication artefacts available to the army? If so, at which level? (it's possible that equipping every man, or even every squad or company, is too expensive but instant communication is still available between brigades or armies)

Magic is too strong a force, and we are too young a prince to engage in magic after we've drawn attention to ourselves. People get publicly disowned for that sort of thing. I think we should lay off magic entirely for 1 year.

Not the king- someone else (perhaps this uncle, who is now heir?) There are powers at play we know nothing about, and until we do, it is better to say away from whatever got our brother in this mess.
