Go to father and ask for him to explain himself.

We're a dutiful son. Father had his reasons, and we can pick those up later from general court rumor. Don't ask directly. Frankly, I'd suppose at this point that William was dabbling in magic, which based on history is a big no-no here.

He looked at us, we're the one, if only we act like it fits us. Being a mouse is not regal. Let the entire court know that we are the next king, and it becomes so.

Good point. Let's make the bold statement first then we can enquire about the situation from our sister or mother or general court rumors.
Only after all that we want to talk to William.

Pretend to be upset by your father's anger, and go to your mother asking for an explanation of the events "because you don't want father mad at you."

I get the feeling that we aren't that close to our father, so however tactful we would be, it would still arouse suspicion. Better to pump the sisters for info.

Yeah, I got the sense that the King was not about to talk on this subject, but our mother might be close enough to have a fairly accurate version of the story. Maldevious' excuse is good. Sister is also good, but maybe as removed from the details as we are.

Given the robes your brother was wearing, and the seriousness of the situation you consider that perhaps your brother was involved in some kind of dark magic, perhaps something to do with the wizard-kings of old. There is no law against the royal family doing magic, so it would have to be more than merely engaging in spellcasting for so serious a punishment.
You feel this is a good opportunity to let your strength be known, so steeling yourself you slowly walk towards your father. All eyes are on you, measuring you, gauging you, you feel more pressured than you ever have before in your short life.
You put them out of your mind,  here they are among the sheep, and you refuse to be among their ranks. You kneel before your father, and speak with all of the authority of a proper prince. "Father, i understand why you have selected Uncle Robilard to be the heir, but i wish to make it clear to you and all assembled that if my brother proves unworthy of the throne i intend to secure a right to it for myself."
Your bold declaration shocks all present, and you notice a look of panic from your mother, who quickly looks between you and your father, and then back through the door your brother was dragged out of mere moments ago. Your father clenches his jaw, and you see his fist tighten around the hilt of his sword. A robed figure steps out of your fathers shadow -you hadn't even noticed him there- and whispers something into your fathers ear, and the king softly tells everyone to get out. The whispering of the scandalized court comes to an end, and there is a moment of hesitance. "GET OUT!" the king bellows, and the room empties within moments. Leaving only you, your mother, the robed man and the King.
"You too Arekmar, i need you to track down whoever else was involved in this, william could not have acted alone." The man nods and hurries away, on second glance you realize that the man is the court mage you tracked down before.
As the doors close, your fathers visage softens and he slowly sinks into his throne, a man clearly concentrating. You know better than to interupt, and it is a long several moments before he speaks. "Boy, Son, this may not have been the best time for this. You've drawn the eye of the whole kingdom upon you in a way that won't be entirely friendly.Still, i can appreciate the balls that must have taken, still a boy and you're more a man than half those pretenders at court." Father sighs deeply and stands, unbuckling his belt from his armor. "You had best find ways of protecting yourself, and be sure not to trust anyone at court. In the years to come i imagine you will also be needing allies." The king walks down the steps towards you, holding out the hilt of a dagger to you. "You had best take this, arm yourself at all times in one fashion or another. i will also be giving you a bodygaurd. He's a hard man, and poor company, but he's more capable than your average guard, i'll pay his wages, but it will be up to you to equip him better if you feel he needs it. Now get out, both of you, i need some time to think."Taking the dagger you bow and depart, your mother at your side."
You make an attempt at speaking with her once you are alone together, but she tells you she has something she must do before she can speak with anyone about anything, and hurries away. You can't help but feel a little hurt, but you suppose that the day has had more than enough scandal to necessitate the full schedule of any queen.
There is a lot that one can do amidst all of this, what shall it be for you?

Seems like that Arekmar has the King's ear, and he apparently knows what happened. What do we know about him... or, to put it in suggestion form... let's go find out about Arekmar.

A king's ear who doesn't play his own tune lacks sense.
Sorry about that. What I mean is: it's not the best idea to trust a professional spy. There's a reason the king sent him away. I say let's go and see mother.

For clarification, the man is the court wizard who told you he was willing to help you on the sly.

All the more reason not to speak to him- it was dangerous before, and it's doubly so now.

Why not talk to the mage? He helped us to fulfill or curiosity in magic. Why not talk to him?

Yes, go see mother.

Because we don't trust him as far as we can throw him?

For one. For another talking to a mage is suspicious (given the history of mages in the kingdom). Do you really want to do that now, when we brought the attention of the whole court to us?
