Dwarf Fortress on Windows Surface?
« on: March 04, 2013, 11:50:20 am »

Hey, I was wondering if Dwarf Fortress would be playable on the Surface Pro, or any tablet ultrabook incarnation, as they seem to be all the rage right now and are getting pretty decent in tech specs.

I'm can't really afford one right now and I'm not looking for hate on the tablets; just wondering if it's possible and if someday down the road, when these things get a bit cheaper, I can play Dwarf Fortress anywhere :).

its possible, we had people in the past running on 40d on intel atom processors and the new ones are alot more powerful. you will have to do alot of adjustments though.

If it works software wise, the fact that the surface has a keyboard is awesome for this.

Yeah, I know! I want to show my dwarves the world...

Tellemurius, by adjustments, do you mean just keeping the world at medium, or, just building a less tasking world?  I'm a bit noobish when it comes to the technical aspects of Dwarf Fortress (other than knowing that it's very system intensive in the background).

yea you would have to kill off alot of features say like weather, caves, you would have to keep your world small and such.

There are mods to simplify many processor-consuming aspects of the game. For example, lowering the number of body parts per dwarf. Because it doesn't matter to you which finger has water on it, but that's tracked every so many steps.
Here's one. Also removes weather and other stuff, like Tellemurius suggests.
I also found this mod that adds more mouse commands. I don't have much experience with this type of computer, so I don't know which input method would be easier.

Ah thanks guys.  I dream of the day where they make dwarf fortress playable with all features on a *portable device.

(*what I consider to be portable)

That's already possible. Dwarf Fortress runs on my Acer Iconia W510 at 100 FPS with default settings.

Playing with the on-screen keyboard is a bit slower than playing with a physical keyboard, but it works well enough.
The Iconia W510 comes with an attachable keyboard, so it's possible to play with that also.

edit: Migrants and their pets arrived, there are also some wolverines and ravens. The average FPS is 80 now.

Guess it depends on what you consider portable.  I can't quite fit it into a pocket but my asus ultrabook is currently my only functional computer, and it runs DF nicely.

Listen up: making a thing a ‼thing‼ doesn't make it more awesome or extreme.  It simply indicates the thing is on fire.  Get it right or look like a silly poser.

It's useful to keep a ‼torch‼ handy.

Hey can I ask, where do you get that full keyboard with ESC and everything? On my Iconia W510 I only have access to two cut down ones and a handwriting section.

Thnx!

Go to the start menu and start typing "on-screen keyboard" and you'll find it. (Or alternatively follow the steps on this video).

Any tips on getting it playable Berserker on the W510?  I'm finding it grinds to a halt during the fourth age (0fps) and I need to ENTER/ESC start from there to get anything happening.

smaller world with less civs and short history are your options
