Is it normal to lag a lot in cities?
« on: February 23, 2013, 10:24:51 pm »

So I have a pretty powerful pc:

intel 3570k 3.4 Ghz - 3.8 Ghz
gtx 670 2gb
16 gb of corsair ram
etc

But I lag like crazy in big cities. Mainly capitals. But it must be something wierd because in the wild I might encounter lag when I start DF up and then if I run around for a minute it clears up. Why do I lag so much in cities with such a powerful pc. Can people even enter cities without crashing with weaker ones. I'll check later but I get like 20 fps I think. I usually get up in the 90's to 100's. Whats wrong?

I believe it is due to buildings, merchants, people, dungeons, tunnels, etc all loading.

Are you using the SDL version or the legacy version?
I have a weaker computer than you and I don't experience any lag anywhere.

I don't really lag a lot on my comp (on DF)
Minecraft 700000 creepers? Have 1 FPS
DF 9000000 modded selfdestructing things in a fiery inferno? 10FPS

I use the SDL version. I don't understand why then if your pc is weaker. I also get like 70 fps in minecraft. But other people have reported having several hundred fps with similar or weaker pc's. Also with hd texture packs. Maybe I is there an fps limit on minecraft? But back on DF I get 240(120) to start in fortress mode since those are my limits. Then about 98(45) with 200 dwarfs on a 6 x 2 map on a large world

Are you using any mods? They might be the cause of the problem.

Sometimes i have heavy lag in cities too. Not always, so i can bear it. I don't know what causes it though.

My computer is really good, but in one city I spent a lot of time in I lagged a lot. One time I was looking for sewer vampires using the DFhack reveal command. I looked down into the ground and -- the caverns are trying to flood themselves. Huge amounts of flowing water = huge amounts of lag.

My big suspect for heavy lag in cities are the tame animals - in some places in town, there are large unbuilt areas containing large numbers of lifestock, all of which need to path to whichever patch of soil they wish to root around in. In the vicinity of these 'pastures', i regularly experience massive slowdowns.

Handling large amounts of water can also slow the game down quite badly, most commonly when swimming across oceans - the deep portions can easily have fifty and more levels of empty water, all of which needs to be initialised and tracked. This can easily land you at about one step per second and a half-minute freeze everytime a new map segment gets loaded.

Depending on how long the city was in place the lag is due to the amount of objects scattered plus the bunch of people living grouped up together

I don't use any mods. But I did notice that when I went into a different city it didnt lag at all. Maybe its only certain cities. So there can be multiple factors.

Me too.

This is also a thing. It's worse in temperate or cold oceans, where the water randomly freezes and unfreezes.
