I thought of that but there are many female characters who are not princesses.

It is possible it is an honorary title but many princesses have been shown in kingdoms (Berry Princess, Ghost Princess, and Bubblegum Princess)

I haven't noticed *many.  Regardless, there are a bunch of princesses for whom the title appears to have no meaning.  I have noticed that there is only one princess for any species, but that still doesn't mean much when, for instance, Turtle Princess is the only turtle in the show.

It is possibly an Opt in title.

Which would mean somewhere there is a Vampire Princess.

Well, theres Marceline and Susan strong, also the gender bender episodes. Probably a whole heap, but its pretty fitting in with the theme of fine being a noble warrior protecting princesses. But what I love is that a lot of these princesses are very untypical of what you'd expect with the title of princess. Like PB for example, first impressions is that she's a genius but a crazy crazy genius. She litterally built a kingdom for herself to be princess in. Weirdly enough there's nearly no kings or queens to talk of, and those that are are evil or from lumpy space.

Oddly enough you are right... Even among male rulers I havn't seen a King that was not evil (And the Ice King is by definition a self-declaired title)

I'd mention Princess Cookie, but that guy was less a princess, more over-sensitive criminal. 

Really isn't  a favourite episode of mine, by any means.
