Indeed, Ice King = Gollum.  However, when you speak of Finn being a hero and not giving up his will, remember, this is Farmworld Finn.  He was good, yes, but the impression I got was goodness of a more personal and local sort, rather than Real Finn's nobility and all-encompassing desire to help others.  Real Finn's desire to be a hero was shaped by his feeling of abandonment and helplessness on Boom Boom Mountain.

Hmm Bravest Warriors is actually a pretty cool more adult thing, though like Adventure Time I find it a bit hit and miss. There's a lot of times it's really great, but also a lot of times it's sorta dull.

The ending to episode 6 was pretty damn epic though.

The Crown perverts the desire of the one who holds it, yet doesn't give them the stability of mind to enact it. The Ice King's desires were simple, he just wanted his "princess" back and slowly it whittled away at him. There wasn't much to corrupt as the Ice King's ultimate motivations are not big but rather small, he just wants to be loved.

While Finn is a dreamer and he wants the world.

I'm not sure about the "perverting the will of the wearer" thing.  It's never seemed presented that way.  Like SethCreiyd says, magic items having a mind and will of their own seems to be a running theme with the show.  They twist the bearer to their own ends, with the nightosphere amulet being the most obvious example.  Plus, Ice King's significant other only left him after the crown began working away at his sanity.  I think the crown has a mind of its own that sort of fuses together over time with the mind of the bearer.

Ice King is no stronger willed than the kings of men who fell to Sauron's rings - ordinary men seduced by a trinket imbued with a dark power they couldn't resist.  Finn may have been instantly 'converted' by the crown, but he didn't try to keep it after the fact.  He could have kept the crown to assist him in the goal of 'saving the world' but giving up his own will to do so is completely against everything Finn stands for - how can one be a hero when one has given in to villainy?

Whereas Ice King resigned himself to his fate after realizing what the crown was, and even after making a "video to the future" describing what it was.  What stopped him from discarding the crown, from putting it someplace it could affect no one?  Only his own weakness.

After these hundreds of years, Ice King is insane, holding only the barest ideations of right against wrong.  He wants to be 'friends' with Finn because he desperately craves companionship, but he no longer has the slightest idea of what actual friendship entails, and he plays at confidence only in the manic way his lack of sanity allows.   Only the barest traces of his former pre-crown personality remain.  He is Gollum with ice magic.

I think the crown is sentient, and knows its own role in the Ice King's downfall, which is why it weeps when it's placed on the Shelf of Penitence.

And that first reveal left me speechless as well.  It's impressive how deep a children's cartoon can be.  He's an extremely sympathetic character and you can't help but feel bad for him.

I like the comparison to the ringwraiths.  It's an interesting one.

There is absolutely no indication that Finn was going to give up the crown, though.  In fact, it seemed like he'd already resigned himself to it after only a few minutes.  He had already dealt with the gang when he regained his senses for a moment.  Instead of throwing the crown away, he told his family that he was dangerous and they had to leave.

Ice King seemed resigned to his fate, but it was kind of different.  He knew that he would die without it.  It's the reason he survived the Mushroom War and aftermath, and he had a responsibility to keep going after adopting Marceline.

When the episode is good in adventure time it is pretty good...

but DANG can the show be boring sometimes.

Anyhow Adventure time has what I will call the "Indie Movie Appeal" if you don't find the show delightfully quirky you are missing out on 90% of the jokes... Which is the boat I am in. I don't find the show that weird or quirky.

I remember back in like season 2 or 3 of Adventure Time where they mentioned the Mushroom War and stuff about the world's backstory, but also said they never planned on including it in the actual show because it was too mature.

How far we've come since then.

I think this is deliberate actually.  When the show began, they used an actual 12 year old boy for the voice of Finn, and they either decided at the outset or very soon after that the character of Finn would grow up along with his voice.  (Watch any episode from this season, then watch the pilot.  The difference is stunning.)  It's kinda natural that the tone of the show might grow up along with the character, since the theoretical target audience of the show is growing up at the same rate.

(This also holds to my crazy theory that 'Adventure Time' as we know it will be canceled in two seasons when Finn turns 18, at which point the show will move onto Adult Swim as a sort of light-hearted Korgoth Of Barbaria type thing.  Go on, try to pretend you wouldn't love that.)

Certainly really enjoying the recent episodes. The episodes with prism are amazing. That and the cosmic owl. What did y'all think of the season 3 finale? I'd give my views but I CBA typing tonnes on my phone

Oddly enough I don't think she was designed to be a big character, afterall all her original gags was just her talking funny in situations that allowed her to talk REALLY funny, but they noticed her popularity and bumped her up in importance.

Sort of the reverse of the Rainbow Unicorn from my observation. At least I think so, Rainbow Unicorn was in quite a few first season episodes but kept showing up less and less.

Mind you I sort of REALLY wonder if she is a "Space Princess" as I havn't seen anything to suggest she is other then her name and I believe a star or something on her (I cannot remembeR)
