Oh yeah, speaking of cool game over screens, TowerClimb has a seperate death image for every possible death. I think it even takes your shirt color into account, but not 100% sure on that. Unfortunately, I miss most of them because I hammer the comfirm key. :(

Triangle Wizard's been around for a few years.  Top down, vector-style graphics, minimalist, mostly black-and-white.  If Asteroids and Nethack had a baby, it'd probably be Triangle Wizard.

Here's the Bay12 forum thread, and here's a writeup on RPS.

I love Triangle Wizard! Definitely belongs on this list. Also, i never thought of it like that but you are totally right in your description of it  :D

Platformines is looking pretty promising.  I don't think it has permadeath though...

I love tower climb.  It's difficult and atmospheric, with so much stuff I've never seen because it's so difficult to survive that long.  I'm downloading Risk of Rain now and looking forward to it.  It's funny, I spent 45 mins on the TIGSource forums looking for something to play that strikes my fancy with no luck, then I come to the trusty 'Other Games' board here and this is the first thread I visit.  Bingo.  Thanks, all.

Platformines is a lot of fun. It needs more content/missions/objectives etc.. to be a great game I think. Still fun to play.

Haha, I haven't played DF in forever but I still check this forum all the time so to get ideas of what to play and to find new games :)

EDIT: Also forgot about Teleglitch! I haven't played it though so I don't know much about it really..

I bought it last night and played it till I died on the 4th level.  It's an excellent game so far and I'm excited to see how it progresses, if I can manage to get to the end.  I like the narrative approach, feeding bits and pieces of the story to you, one at a time.  The combat is very satisfying as well, with the nice looking screen/color glitch effects that really give a visceral sense to your actions.  My one, very minor complaint is that the enemy move like they're on ice, sliding while trying to correct their course.  I'm not even sure that's a complaint, I just thought it was an odd choice.  Though, now that I think about it, maybe it makes sense given the circumstances around what the enemies are, and how they exist.

I can vouch for Red Rogue, it is full of awesomesauce! You play as the widow of the @ from nethack, for Christ's sake. Teleglitch is great too.

Teleglitch is good. Made a thread for it but no one really seemed interested. Bosses get a little crazy in the late game. I got locked in a shoebox-sized room with this....giant thing that proceeded to kill me in a second flat. I was a little pissed about that.

Just played some of the Teleglitch demo and it's freaking great. Wish it had gamepad support but it works okay with xpadder.

There's also the really obvious stuff like Faster Than Light and Day Z which are often considered "Roguelike-likes".
I'm honestly a little confused on what determines if a game has "roguelike elements" now-a-days. Usually it's described as perma-death, unavoidable negative consequences to actions and randomisation of levels/environments. Does that mean that games such as Atom Zombie Smasher has roguelike elements to it or have they transcended to their own genre?

I'd call AZS an RTS title because you're usually commanding several different elements at once, and the strategy is more important than anything.

Then again, you do the same in FTL and you basically do the same thing...

A lot of games get put under roguelike or roguelike-like these days but I never understood why FTL was lumped in. FTL is more of a strategy/sim, it's nothing like a roguelike really but it's a cool game. Also I'm talking action-roguelikes and there isn't much action in FTL   :P

That looks pretty cool.  My only gripe is with the cartoon graphics in a setting otherwise rife with dark, demonic elements.  That's not enough to put me off though; I might try it when it comes out next week(ish).

Edit:  I also want to point out to those of you who may be keen and given that it fits into the type of game we're discussing, Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition is on sale at Amazon for $15.  Spotted over at Savygamer this morning.  I picked it up and am looking forward to getting it loaded up.
