I don't think I'll play this game. Something doesn't seem right and the violence scene was cartoony indeed but it was because it was cartoony that made it so traumatic.

People were happy going along their buisness when BOOM! Everyone bad happens!

Like DF? It seems out of place to see a bloodbath full of smiley faces.

Depends on your definition of "bad".

Hmm, it seems you can convert anyone?  I would love it if there was more attention paid to the social aspect of it, gaining followers, etc.

I think it has to do with the sprites, personally, and the glaring contrast between low-res victims and high rez blood splatters. Juxtaposing things that evoke childhood with graphic violence. It's not necessarily off putting to me, but it does kind of stand out. Reading the website though, I guess I'm not surprised. These guys seem like they have a twisted sense humor.

I imagine that's what revolutions will be like when it approaches v1, instead of just plopping down terrorists and tearing the city apart. It will probably have more underground organization until the day comes when the resistance rises up and takes over the city.

I love, love, love the look of this, but I'm on the fence about ordering. I can't find anywhere that talks about their future plans, and that's important for me. The rioters are great, but what else might we do in the future? OP mentions several scenarios ("aliens, giant robots, zombies, a Commie invasion and probably every other cheesy end-of-society scenario there is out there"), but I don't actually see the devs saying those things.

$15 is a lot for a single gimmick game. On the other hand, $15 is a steal for a game that has rioters, aliens, giant robots, etc.

The front page describes society falling from the revolution and then a new world of nature being born from the ashes, with a way to destroy that as well. Since there are obviously no people left, there must be some non-human way to destroy everything. One of the last lines describes at least an option to start a civilization-killing pandemic: "The spread of disease: a few twiddles of the propagation engine and watch the birth of a zombie materialist contagion. They should have washed their hands!"

There is currently a super-duper secret area of the forums: two boards hidden to all but the people who bought it. In this closed-off area, the devs have expressed a willingness to take suggestions. If enough people wanted it - which I'm sure there would be - then the devs would most likely add a way to destroy society in wacky ways when revolutions get old.

I don't find it surprising that many people aren't willing to invest in a project that is just off the ground. I personally bought it because I have some cash to spare and I want to support the devs in creating a great game, which is a $15 risk I am perfectly willing to take.

That's fair enough. I have heard they seem willing to listen to suggestions, which can only be a good thing. I think I'll wait to see where it goes and how fast they're progressing.

My concern is that, are there actual features planned to underpin these modes? Because a zombie apocalypse in the Wildfire Engine would look A LOT like the riot simulation without any other features. Their whole engine is built around doing stuff like this, which is cool, but I worry that these other modes may just be a palette swap because their engine is designed to basically do one thing, that's been fully featured in the riot mode.

Exactly my thoughts when I read it, too. Fire, infection, riots-- all of those boil down to the 'wildfire' mechanic the game appears to be named for. ThingX touches ObjectY -> ObjectY is converted to ThingY.

When it comes to more unique destructive elements (a 'big nasty' enemy i.e. giant robot/godzilla/whatever, or meteor showers raining from the sky) I don't see any evidence that such elements may be forthcoming. Which would be a shame, because I see a lot of potential in pairing many of these elements up in the same gamespace- falling meteors destroy buildings and kill civilians, but also set fires that can spread throughout the city, perhaps causing a widespread panic that results in out-of-control crowds that trample anyone they run into.

I'd like to see a lot of interactivity like that. Currently it looks like you can only play with 1 element at a time.

I brought that up at the awesomely super-secret dev forum, and this was the response:

As for the mad disasters people would like to see. It's very important we get all the systems in there first. Fire & Fire fighters. Medics. Full range of police types. Expanding on the functions of engineers. etc. We need a solid set of systems so the town functions with some depth. When we finally stick dinosaurs/aliens/etc in there, we want them to interact and affect the systems in interesting ways, not just be a gimmick which doesn't really do much.

Our #1 priority is getting the town to work and work well. After that, we shall be getting funky!

That's cool. Also, I was tired last night and apparently used the word "elements" about a bajillion times. Sorry for that. :P

The front page has been redone to be better at segregating what they have planned and what they have actually done already, thanks to a dev reading this thread and everyone's lovely complaints :P
