That is simply incredible. According to the wiki, it's the largest thing to enter our atmosphere since at least 1947, if not Tunguska.

Do we have any specifics on this meteor? Size and composition?
Why did this one exert the energy of a nuclear device while others just burn up harmlessly?

I have heard it was most likely Iron given the fact that fragments made it to earth (fragments currently going at around $49.89).

I was under the impression that iron based meteorites were generally small in size... Surprising that it could release such havoc.

It was definitely larger than most meteors that encounter the earth, though the reports on it's exact size seem to vary. Hopefully in a few days we'll have a more definite estimate.

Delightful evidence that this was of alien origin rather than just an asteroid.

We're up to a thousand now? Was just 300 this morning.

Anyway, there was some talk about in the emotion threads.

As for a meteroid defense system. Doubt it'll work. These small meteors are nearly undectable, meaning that you'll need to set up rapid response systems all over the nation.

Man,wow.So many people injured.
They counted 'injured' as 'anyone who asked for medical treatment' [and medicine is free here]. Its mostly glass shard cuts and bruises, with number of people hospitalized being around 50 by latest reports.

Size: 10 meters
Weight: approximately 10 ton
Speed: 54000 kmh = 15 km/s

The reason it was so energetic is that for reasons mostly unknown, it explosively disintegrated during reentry (rather than burning up slowly). Hence the supersonic airblast, which did most of the damage. Similair things happened with the Tunguska event.

I'm hearing some people say that the blast wasn't from its disintegration, just passing through the atmosphere at such high speeds. Not sure which is the true case though
